My girlfriend has spent two summers working in Edinburgh with uni friends and loved them both times. We've just moved over here a few weeks ago to live and as far as I can see there aren't too many retail jobs about but check Gumtree closer to the time for bar/waiting positions. The gf stayed in a hostel, three of the got a room for a few months at a reduced rate and they pretty muched worked during the day and drank during the night, especially during August for the festival. Its a good plan for your summer, costs very little to get here and its pretty cheap to stay.
