Yes, all google searches turn up on the IT guys and or Managers history... especially the rudey nudey searches.

They would more than likely be able to see any page visited, including search result pages.

    So, yes.

Can they really see your board's posts? I mean I know they can view the same pages, but can they see that it's you? What about other stuff like hotmail etc? Can they view that stuff even without a password?

Not really, just how much time you waste on hotmail.

Yes we can. All i have to do is pull the report and click on a link that a particular person went to. This will bring me to their posts.

Hotmail no, but as another poster says we can see every site you go to. I believe web mail is usually encrypted though.

Its not funny though because the brass are looking for any excuse to fire people and thats why i have to deal with this report. Not to mention read them all and write my own report on who is the least productive, along with my other managers. The reading part is fun though. Amazing who posts what really.

If I were you working where you are I would not be on fecking boards explaining why you are writing a report out that might get people fired for wasting time on the internet.

But how do you know they posted a particular post?

For instance, if you see ''http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/usercp.php'' on a person's history, and you click on that link, surely it will just bring you to the login page, and not their actual usercp, likewise with all their new posts?

Or is it just a case of matching the posting times with the time they viewed the page?

I just clicked the cached google pages though.

On a similar note, would searches show up if connected through VPN?

Why not? I have to speak to them anyway over the next few weeks or months. Whenever the hammer falls. Also several others i know will be having the same conversation with their staff soon too. Its just the climate we're in. Redundancies or Firings. Firings cost a company nothing and company bosses, like mine, are scraping to save money ANYWHERE.

Depending on how bored your local BOFH he can capture and see EVERY think you enter.

This includes email, websites visited or just searched for, and encrypting is not going to help either since it can easily decoded with out you even knowing.....

    Edit:

I've a nice little program that displays all the images that pass over the network.

The cache pages and log will still be on your system. VPN connection can be intersected and monitored but it take a little more work, so if you have not pissed over the networking guys you should be ok.

    This is your post.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=58927760&postcount=13

This is what would come up beside your name in the report.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=xxxxxxxxxx
    The timestamps will match.
A report with 10 or 20 of these will identify you beyond doubt.
It sticks out like a sore thumb off the report.

And if you are targeted due to activity on the net the Ops dept will be recording your screen as you work.
You wont even know it. The Lawyers insist its done that way.

When the hammer comes they will bring you in and give you the bad news. Object and they'll show you the recordings.

Its been done before in my place, but for criminal activity, not for general time wasting on the net. But now that savings can be made, its different and anyones up for eviction.

Boards.ie is not the only site that comes up in reports either. So be careful. Companies will do anything to save money now.

    Interesting.

Well, internet usage, while not really looked upon kindly in work, is used by many and it seems a blind eye is turned once you're getting your work done.

Still though, will think twice in future before I start to browse, as I would be on boards a lot throughout the day.

In my last job they were constantly running proxy reports and anyone with more than 5 hours a week internet usage got a verbal warning as it meant that they were using the internet outside their lunch hour.

I had to pour bleach in my eyes after reading some of the proxy logs....

what about using your own proxy. There will be no proxy logs then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭BaconZombie

Yes, plus using an unauthorised proxy is most likely a break of your company's AUP.

OP you seem really worried / nervous / petrified / scared.

You must be doing something seriously wrong to be that panicky! Save the inappropriate google searches, internet activity for when you leave work.

I use the internet in work from time to time and the only thing that the company can track is my keystrokes (if they want). They are unable to do anything else.
    All companies are different.

Good point. We were getting off the original question a bit.
OP you are probably fine. You wont be watched unless you end up on the watch list. And to get on that you'll need to be one of the top abusers i would say. They wont be searching randomly at all.
