The Commissioner continued: “With that in mind we want to intervene early with young people and bring home to them the dangers of deciding to carry a knife, not least of which is the risk that it will be used on themselves. The message is simple: Carrying a knife is against the law and if you are caught you will be charged and brought to court. Carrying a knife greatly increases your chances of being seriously injured or killed in a fight.”

Great proactive initiative, I hope it is successful!

There's nothing proactive about it, it's a reaction to the increase in knife crime. If they wanted to be proactive they should have sorted out the stop & search powers ages ago.

No harm adding a bit of extra bite to the sentencing if it will be used.

What's the chances of the judiciary using this extra bite? It's rare enough that they give decent sentences at present.

Well, our Govt seems to like to lag behind with legislation.. in many areas.

What is the story with carrying one of these? Would you be done with one in your wallet if stopped and searched?

How big is the blade, is it a fixed or collapsible, why do you have it on you, what are the circumstances of the stop and search are you a juvenille or an adult, are you MacGyver......?

Discretion can play a part in dealing with something like this, i.e you could be arrested for having a pointed/bladed article in a public place, but equally you could be given words of advice and sent on your way.

The blade on the swiss card is only about an inch long, its a letter opener not a knife as such.

The swiss card is the business mans version of the swissarmy knife, has like a biro on it and stuff

Did anyone else notice that the proposed increase in jail sentence from 1 yr to 5 yrs make carrying a knife now an arrestable offence under section 4?
Cant see many mules arresting people though.

there will be and is a lot of prisoners for posession of knifes anc other offensive weapon.

Joe Soap has no reason to carry a blade down the road regardless of how big or small it is except on rare occasions.
