5.1 AAC sound issues

I wonder if anyone else has this problem?

When playing some downloaded movies with 5.1 (AAC V4 LC codec), I get playback, but no sound. However, when I fast forward at 1.5x there is sound.

Currently, I have my audio out via optical to a decoder, and video via HDMI to the back of the TV.

If I change the audio to outout via HDMI then I get sound during normal playback. However, this is only through the stereo (and pretty average) speakers of my TV.

I'm thinking it must be a problem with the PS3 firmware as the sound is obviously being sent to (and decoded by) the decoder, if it is audible in 1.5x speed. For some reason something is just happening with normal playback.

Has anybody experienced this issue when outputing audio via HDMI to a receiver?

    I don't have any problem with AC3 5.1.

    Any ideas?

You might need to play around with the audio settings where you can set "lpcm or bitstream" when using optical or hdmi out for sound. It seems like your amp cant decode AAC as its being passed through from ps3 to amp.
When your ps3 is connected to the tv it sounds like the ps3 is encoding the aac track into 2.0 stereo.

As for why you hear sound when you fast foward, seems very strange.

You have no probs with ac3 5.1, as your amp will decode these ,dolbly digital/dts.

Actually, I solved the problem myself, just after I posted...

I went into the audio settings and unchecked the AAC option. That seemed to do the trick.

So, if anyone else is having similar problems, try playing around with the Dolby, dts and AAC settings and you might be sorted.

I still think it's an issue with the PS3 firmware though, and might be fixed in future updates...
