    Hi
Does anyone have any recommendations/advice about folding bikes? I'm considering getting one for the journey from home - station and Heuston - Merrion Sq.

    Thanks
    Amy

They do pale in comparison to a regular bike and do look crazy unfolded. But they do have that a certain odd charm to them.

I've used them myself in similar commutes, and they are not all that harder to cycle (although you do need to be a bit more carful with your balance until you get used to it).

Your first challange may be just getting one. I had a hard time finding mine in the first place until, in the end, I got one here:

Generally, the more you pay, the lighter the material the bike is made of (easier for carrying). I bought one 3 years ago for ~500Euro. It was in comparison heavier, but still, an all round good bike.

The other thing is maintainance. The wheels are smaller, and tend to take a bit of a battering. Replacment parts may be hard to come by. That all said, I had to travel on a very poorly paved route with potholes galore! So if you find some good tarmaced surfaces to travel, the bike should last.

(PS. Bike parking was never an issue, as they are designed to fit under most desks!)
