Does anyone know if using the Star of Life symbol is governed legally or by any state body? I heard recently that only EFR and above may use it and that it is illegal for OFAs to use it? I'm skeptical though as the symbol is used worldwide to notify people of the presence of any emergency medical service. Anybody got a clue?

Goodness knows who said that but the reality is the SOL is no longer copyrighted by the original creator so anyone can use it for whatever purpose they have in mind.

EFR is Emergency First Responder, is OFA Occupational First Aider? Sorry to go off-topic...

    Back on-topic...
Wikipedia says "The newly designed logo was trademarked on February 1, 1977 with the Commissioner of Patents and Trade-marks in the name of the National Highway Traffic Safety and Administration (registration number 1058022). The logo was 'given' to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for use as the emergency medical technicians (EMT) logo after the trademark expired in 1997.[3][citation needed]"

and "While no agency is tasked solely with enforcing its use as a mark of certification, the Star of Life has traditionally been used as a means of identification for medical personnel, equipment, and vehicles."

I suppose that means that it's trademarked, but nobody really minds if it's used in good faith?
