Best room in the house?

Your stuck in your normal two up two down house. Right now escape is impossible so you have to stay put. What room do you choose? I'm thinking the attic. It's obviously the least accessible, and there is a tank of water up there to keep you going for a few days. The main disadvantage is that should they find a way in, there is no escape route.

    What's your pick?

    +1 for the attic.
Mine has a folding set of attic stairs so getting in and out wouldn't be an issue.
If trapped, you could easily get out onto your roof either via a skylight or simply by kicking out some roof tiles. Once on the roof you could gain access to neighbouring houses which would also have tanks of water in the attic and possible food/ survival tools to loot from the houses.
Plus the attic/roof offers a height advantage for checking just how bad the situation outside is.

*Better put some canned goods in the attic later!

What you really need is the new zombie proff attic stairs from Stira.

    Bad idea. If the power goes it could get stuck in the open position leaving it an easy climb for Z's. Plus that video makes it look really slow...what if you have to get back up in the attic as you were being chased? You want the attic to be only accessible by humans, so I think one of these would be better;

    Rope%20ladder%20ceiling%20fixture.JPG

You can pull it up far quicker than the Stira and even if you can't it would be very tricky for a zombie to have enough balance and agility to climb up it.

    lolStira

yea, attic is the only way to go. but i have my attic converted [so do many people on my road] so i'm in a bit of a pickle. dunno.
i'd prolly take down the ground to first floor stairs, and live up there. bathroom, 4 rooms, and i suppose if i was arsed, cut a hole in the floor for sneaky access to the kitchen. could use bed bases to reinforce around the hole that the stairs left. also, easy escape onto roof of side lane-way [semi-d house] other than that...

I know this is what Brooks suggests in The survival guide and it does seem like a great idea but how easy or possible would it be for the average joe with limited tools lying around to take down a stair case? Bare in mind you may be in a hurry and have nothing but a hand saw and hammer (general household tools) at your disposal!

Well, I have to be a sheep, but the attic is the obvious choice.

    1. The Z's can't easilly get up - in fact I'd say it was nigh on impossible for them to do so.
    2. As mentioned - large tank of water.
    3. In all the junk you find thrown up there, you might find something useful.
    4. One may be able to find a way to cut through the material / slates to clamber onto the roof, and if you're lucky enough to be in a semi-detached or (even luckier) a terraced house, you could break through their roofs to go on scavenging missions / make escape routes.
    5. If you've managed point (4), and the attic is a long term stronghold, you'd need to make a "door" between yourselves and the roof to shelter the attic from weather.

Jacks. Plenty of water and only one ingress - unless they've learned to climb......

Actually, if you had something like a ladder or plank that you could use to span the gap between houses, it'd be better to be in a semi detached than a terrace. The more houses on the terrace, the more chances of the zombies gaining access to the roof somehow. You can't depend on all the houses to be impenetrable. So if you were in a semi detached, you could still use the plank to cross the alley, whereas the zombies won't be able to jump the gap. You could even use the plank several times to make your way over to more and more houses. Just don't drop the plank

True enough! The point remains though, the attic still remains the best temporary place in the house until you can make it to your stronghold.

Unless, of course, you make it your stronghold...!

Zombies can barely climb stairs I reckon they'd have no chance with any sort of ladder.

They'd haul themselves up the stira sooner or later. I'm delira with me stira. My attic is my 2nd floor so I'd have to destroy the stairs. This wouldn't be a problem with an axe. It'd only take 30mins I'd say.

even though i live in a standard house (2 floors and attic) id like to think that giving the time id try take out the stairs after i could gather as much supplies from downstairs and try hold up in the attic. Dont know how effective it would be in the long term but its the only place in most homes that you could consider safe.

If the regular house stairs could not be destroyed, the obvious thing is to plug it up with furniture. Beds, lockers etc all chucked down a stairs would make a good temp barrier, and allow time to bring bedcothes, clothing etc up to the attic for warmth.

    Stairs.gif

assuming this is the typical stairs :/

take a sledge to the side part(s), then the steps will be loose enough to destroy.

or, rebuild your house to look something like this:

It'd be bad enough if there are zombies in your house wth out the presence of floating ghost stairs!:D

Get these stairs installed. Zombies don't seem the most intelligent... I don't think they'd notice the steps if they were folded up.

I'd just get an escalator installed. And I'd hide upstairs. I'd put the escalator on bavwards. So the zombies will be pushed back.

Although it'd prbably break. It would buy me some time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

As a stop-gap I'd go for the attic, but my attic would be terrible to live in.

A nice aspect of most attics is that they tend to cover the whole area of the house... handy to make little spy holes to see if anything is hanging around in the rooms below.

You could also do some work on your gutters to get another supply of fresh water.

How many steps on a staircase would you reckon you'd need to remove to make a quick but safe deterrant?

And when the power goes out all your left with is metal stairs!

I saw this when I was looking at the electric stira. They have a whole range of new zombie proofing for your home.

    Zombie hatch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭LorraineL

Wouldn't mind having one of these as a holiday home, would provide good protection on Z day too. Lose the stairs going up the side, maybe use a rope ladder or something and you'd have some chance of survival. See how the windows can be covered over, there's a wheel inside the you turn and the shutters come accross the glass. It's actually very nice inside too, nicer than my attic anyway. :o

    Kitchen.

Food, weapons and if you need to take your own life ... its all there. Also their sense of smell is awesome, start cooking and put them off.

*Edit: Actually, I'm just hungry so might not be the best option.

Stairs go from fully extended to attic fully sealed in only .... um ... 28 seconds.
    Hope they're uber-slow zombies.

its not technically a room per se,
but the top of the stairs.

the chances of zombies managing to climb in through your upper windows are very slim, unless theyre smart enough to use a ladder, same goes for the attics/roof.

so therefore their main entry point is the stairs, which will then bottleneck them for easy killings, and also over time case a small dam of bodies, blocking other zombies slightly.

you also have your escape routes, of the bed room windows, access to the attic, and also, if like most houses have your toilet upstairs, access to fresh water and toilet. you will also have quick access to downstairs for whatevers needed.

so we've pretty much covered the attic as prob the best room in the house to hide from "them"- BUT what like me for example are living in a ground floor 2 bed appt! eek what then?- may as well pour some dressing of me and call me the appertizer!;)

I wrote a short story about zombie invasion for my mock English a week or two ago. :pac:

I said the bathroom. Female protaganist is able to survive with bath/sink water and edible stuff in medicine cabinet etc. Can use sharp tools as weapons. Also able to write a diary on the loo roll. Final entry is "Itchy tasty" Tribute to RE1! :D

Let's hope it got a good result.

Original Night of the living dead made me wonder why they didn't just trash the staircase so no zombie could go up them or just hide in the attic..

"Dear diary, today i ate the last disprin. Now I am completely out of food and my migrane will come back. Damn it! Stupid zombies!"

I prefer zombies as cocktails not as half deads :D

Only problem would be the smell... I'd want those decomposing corpses as far away from me as possible. It's bad enough I gotta drink toilet water. (Can't flush, don't wanna waste the precious H2O)

I actually think my room at home is a fairly good temporary stronghold. Loaded up with snacks, bathroom just across the narrow and dead ended hall. Got plenty o' weapons and pointy things. Only problem is my window, front of the house. Ground floor.

Did you see how slow it was coming down. By the time that stairs touches the floor, the zombies will have had ya for breakfast. For me it's the attic as well. I have a converted attic which has access to the roof tops. So I can climb onto the roof, jump down onto the neighbour's extention and get into their house

i'm sure if you tweak the electronics a bit, maybe install a new motor, you could have it up or down in a few seconds.

I think it's currently running on the added tension motor, made in Hollywood. It's guaranteed to open just in the nick of time though.
