2004 iPod Mini = best mp3 player

when these were released I thought they were just disposable pieces of crap that break after a few years.. but not so. they just don't make mp3 players like they used to anymore. every little part in this can be easily replaced and rockbox runs good. it`s kind of sad how the quality has gone down in order to make the things smaller / cheaper.

is there anything that is even near as hackable as the mini and with a good metal case around it?

no shortage of space on the mini either :)

Iriver H140 and H340 beat the opposition for best legacy mp3 players.
Superior DAC and proper lineout plus full rockbox. Mine both still work
and I purchased them on launch.

Still use an iriver h120 and a 1st gen shuffle despite having owned newer devices that i just didn't think much of.

have to agree the h140 was the best device i have ever used, coupled with rockbox i didn't need anything else. mine still works fine but i've substituted functionality for form factor of an iphone. having two devices in one and the size was too big a pull.

towel401 i can certainly see where you are coming from, the ipod mini first gen were a great size and shape, coupled with rockbox it made the crippled shipped ipod something worth handing cash over for.
