There was a hefty thread on it in the Galway City forum. Needless to say, it's locked now :)

I don't know they have the right to protest against fees. Not many people would support their reintroduction I'd imagine.

Protesting around Bertie will obviously get you more publicity since he's a bit of a media whore. If the government know people are seriously against fees that may sway there decision making.

Having said that it probably did get a bit out of hand considering he has all the right in the world to speak at an event he was invited to on an unrelated topic. They should have protested loudly and left it at that - however that would not have got the same media attention

Ah, the resident "facial hair and lacking a shower" crew.

They have been getting very active this semester.

I'm in favour of bringing in fees. I laughed at the protesters. Then I was annoyed that I didn't even know Bertie was giving a talk. They really suck at advertising these kinds of events in Cairnes...

Do you not get the texts and emails from lit and deb? If not you should sign up to them. If you don't know what they're at it's your own fault, especially for an event as big as Bertie coming over.

That is somewhat surprising alright. Even when you remove yourself from the society on YourSpace, you're added again a few weeks/months later

I'm far from a fan of bertie, and had it been during his reign of terror, and for different reasons would have probably supported it. Seriously though, pick your targets. He has stepped away from the public lime light and the whole protest was a waste of time and only served to undermine their cause through a general loss of sympathy as a result of their behaviour.

Secondly, I'm in favour of fees, coupled with student loans to allow those who really want to go to college go and pay back their loan and to increase funding in general to make a degree more valuable and not just a piece of paper as it had become in Ireland. I know of 2 such cases where people have gone to college for a soft option, to bide their time with no real intention of finishing their degree, costing time, money, space and also making a mockery out of the system as a whole. If they had to pay E5000-6000 for the holiday, they would not have been so forthcoming.
