What's the story with the airport ?

    It really seems like Dublin Airport was unprepared for today. Today's snow was not heavy compared to other countries in recent days.

    I had a family member traveling to Germany earlier. Their flight was canceled. The crowds in the airport made it difficult to get any information, other than the airport was closed. The website for Aer Lingus offered no information on cancellations, yet the Dublin Airport Authority was telling passengers to check with their carrier.

    I fully understand the safety issues, but there were one or two planes still taking off - one to New York and one to Heathrow. How can these planes take off, but it's considered dangerous for others?

    How much money was lost today?

    Their route or destinations may be seen as safe?

    The Irish public sector got all emotional watching the Al Gore's movie and made the infantile assumption that because he wasn't Bush then he has to be some kind of brilliant and honest enviromentalist. Then they based their environmental plan of future action on the science of Tom Yorke guest editorials in The Guardian, Coldplay lyrics, Madonna's dire warnings while wearing fish net stockings and headcase journalists like this RTE dopey spa;

    Sure weren't we promised Mangos in Marino by now.

    Well today was the heaviest so far on the northside. They were prepared but there is nothing much they can do. It takes over 2hours to scrap off the snow and then they have to spray the runway to hold off the ice as long as possible. Then they have to do the same with the taxiways.
    The airport authority is paranoid regarding the braking ability of a plane and snow/slush can seriously effect breaking ability. Safety come first.

    Have a listen here for Dublin Air Traffic Control

    I presume they tell you to call the airline because even though the airport is back in operation, the planes might not be in the right places, staff might not be in the right places or might not be allowed to work more hours, food or other supplies might not have made it to the plane because it's in the wrong place. I'd imagine the airlines are working pretty hard to get everything up and running but it can't be easy.

    I'm a little late responding, but also keep an eye on the "Latest News" section on the front of www.dub.aero
