Here is the latest brand new BMW 520d SE price from the UK £24,241

    less VAT £21,079 = €24,040 + 21.5% Vat (€5,168)

    VRT approx 7k

    €12,000 tax in total

Brand new car landed for under 36,000 euro.

Look at Irish dealers trying to sell used imports for 42k.

Sounds good, how much is a new 520d here off a bmw forecourt?

    interesting.
Sterling seems to be getting stronger the last week or so. Dont know if its going to head towards parity again or continue to strengthen again the euro.
Dont forget even with the SE, you would usually stick about 3k worth of extras on the car to get it nicely spec'd. and the vrt could be alittle more but at that price it makes sense to do.

If I understand your figures, you are buying ex vat in uk new for export. Then paying VAT here based on the uk invoice figure, (vat at the irish rate) and then vrt based on omsp of about 45k. Sounds right to me..

The price I am using is the price I will pay for a new one in the UK.

Why are you on about "A like for like comparison"

The same car is 11 grand cheaper according to your figures, address that instead.

I mean exactly that. A like for like comparison. It's not fair to be comparing a discounted UK price (albeit you say a brand new car) with the undiscounted Irish price. Maybe if you shop around amongst Irish dealers you'll find one willing to give 4-5k off for a straight sale. Don't get me wrong, the price difference is still too great to justify buying here. Sure I saved myself a tidy five figure sum by buying mine in the UK. Apologies for being picky with the figures but keeping the comparisons fair leaves less chance for the FUD merchants to stick their oar in.

I know but 11 grand is madness

Look at the ads the BMW boys here are running.

    08 520s SE 46k
we will import from the UK for you and save you the hassle (but pocket 10 grand over the price of a new one)
