Hi , Im entered in the Connemarathon, its in 44 days time, last weekend i ran the quantum life 10 mile road race in Dungarvan, about 3 miles in i did some damage to my calf muscle, its a level 1 strain . Since then i have had it looked at professionally and have had it treated, it is strapped up and am only walking on it at the moment. Question is how should i rest for? My training was going very well before this, i had done a couple of 30k runs and was very happy with progress. Connemarathon is my first attempt at a marathon, i realy need to do this race. Any advice or help on how i should proceed would be very much appreciated.

Obviously something the OP didn't want to hear!

Rest for as long as possible, did your physio not give you some timeline? I had what was a level 2 tear , 3 weeks later i'm back. I did a few runs after 2 week but only short. I think they set me back a few days. With a level one you should be back soon enough.

Did your physio give you advise on when to start stretching etc?

I am stretching today and it is getting better, just worried i wont be able to make up lost ground because of it. Its not long till the race. It will be hard to get back to where i was a couple of weeks ago. I believe the connemarathon is a very tough marathon, anybody have any views on that.

Was your goal to just finish it or finish it in a specific time ? I lost a month or so coming up to a marathon previously and still went ahead and ran it but if you were aiming for a 'good' time then you may have to reset your goals.

(Was the physio's advice a special secret ?)

The physios advice was to rest for a few days, and he gave me some specific stretches to do. I also have to go back again for some needle therepy. Because its my first marathon and connemarathon is tough I am just hopeing to finish in less than 4hours. I think I can achieve this, just dont want the calf strain to cause me any more delays in my training schedule. Is the normal recovery time for a level 1 strain about a week?

Once you take it reasonably slowly on the comeback it sounds to me as if you'll be fine. Obviously I havn't seen you calf but going on what you've posted you shouldn't have any problem getting back into moderate training in a week. The calf muscles are big with a good blood supply and generally heal well. Take a few days off completely 3-4. start back very gentle jogging 1-2 miles if you get sharp pain of any sort back off completely, otherwise increase slowly by 1-2 miles each training session and chances are you'll be grand.

A week to 10 days sounds right to me, Level 1 is the lowest i'm just coming back from a level 2 which took over 3 week.

Try not to over do it when you come back, and don't worry about the missed training, the biggest mistake you could make now it trying to make up for the lost training, have one easy week then get back into your program.. and enjoy it :)
