I was looking at getting an FCR for Commuting and kindly request your experience's and opinion on the 3 models.

I'm going to spend about 700 on a Commuting Bike and Like the FCR but unsure as to which on.

    Thanks in advance.

    4 models actually
generally : better components and lighter as you go from 4 -> 1
    dunno specifically from 4-3, but
3->2 : carbon forks, better gearing components,
2 -> 1 : triple -> double cranks (3 -> 2 chain rings up front) , better rear derailleur, better rims (wheels), carbon seatpost.

Are you asking if you can or if you should?

I got a FCR 2 last september (2008 model). Totally love it. Tiagra setup is super quick for gear changes and the weight (for a Small size frame) is just over 9.5kg!!
I ride it from Kilmainham to Sandyford probably avg about 3 days a week - get Luas other days.

I don't like to take business away from local shops - but their prices are defo on the high side for this bike - I would look at some online shops - I did and saved about €250 (ie I got it for €450)- would be even more saved now with exchange rate.

I personally didn't think the carbon seat post/handlebar etc was worth the extra on the FCR 1.

    Cheers

Irish Army, I got an FCR1 before christmas.
Great bike, I got the 2008 model for €680 from cyclesuperstore out in tallaght.
I'd say you might get it cheaper online, both the 08 & 09.
Apparently the 2008 model was slightly more expensive and had different components than the 2009, some of the experts here might be able to tell you exactly what?
I just got the 2008 as I needed a big bike (I'm 6'6") and they had it in stock, plus they did me a bit of a deal with another bike.

    www.winstanlesybikes.co.uk

Shipping to the republic is about €25

No I don't work for them but I have bought two bikes from them and service has been great. Obviously as with any online purchase you can't take the bike back in if you need anything tweaked after putting it together. If you have your own tools this is not a problem.

When I say putting together - it's just attaching the handle bar and front wheel.

    Cheers

Well, I put down a 100 Euro deposit on an FCR 1 today..(Cyclesuperstore) they didn't have my size which is why I didn't get it today.. should have it early next week.. its the largest one available. the 50 seems a bit compact for my size.

Its the 09 model.. Can't wait.. Pictures will be posted ;)

I hope this doesn't constitute a hijacking of this thread but can anyone tell me why the 08 version of the FCR1 is more expensive than the 09 model (by 80 euro on the Cycle Superstore site anyway)?

    Is it components or what?

08 model specs are here: http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=38&idproduct=16578

09 model specs are here: http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=38&idproduct=23604

I've been commuting by bike for years but have no idea about components or any of that, so any info appreciated.

Hey Irish Army, how much did you pay for the 09 model? I swear I saw the 09 model for 640 approx on the cycle superstore website but since quoting that price to my LBS the Cycle cuperstore site has changed its price.

Corkjohn, cyclesuperstore had the 08 FCR1 reduced to 680, the 09 was 799, I got these prices from November last year when I bought my 08 FCR1.
I see the 08 FCR1 is at 719.20 at the moment, and the 09 is still 799.
Unless they did a sale after christmas and thats where you saw it?

Check out Sean Duffs in Omni SC in Santry. I know they have loads of Giant bikes. Don't think they've a website, so you'd have to call them. A mate of mine told me they had the 09 FCR1 cheaper than cyclesuperstore by €50 when I was looking before christmas. In the end I went for cyclesuperstore and the 08 as they gave me a good deal when buying 2 bikes.

Nice bike Irisharmy :) I think the blue/black 08 is nicer though ;):D
