    Hi,

I was interested in getting some of my tax back now that money is tight, bin charges, rent allowance etc.

I saw a few companies online that will do this for you, and they only charge you if you get a refund.

Does anybody have any experiece with these companies and are they safe?

And would it save me a lot of time and hassle to get them to do it for me, or could I get it done myself easily enough?

    Thanks,

    John

Why not just do it yourself. Ring the revenue and ask them for the rent relief, service charges and medical expenses forms and all you have to do is fill them in and send it back. Or you can download the forms and print them yourself.

In fact I have filled out these forms loads of times and helped others so pm me if your stuck or need a hand. No point paying someone for it when it's so easy to do yourself.

Are you entitled to any taxback? You easily ring the Revenue and they will tell you. The number to ring depends on where you live so go to the Revenue website and give them your PPSN. to find the right number.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm just wondering now, if it's this easy, then why are there companies out there that do it for you? Is it just for people who cant afford to spend a couple of hours doing it themselves?

John it wont take you a couple of hours and the reason people are using it as a business is probably because people are terrified of the revenue and making mistakes they see this as making a bit of handy cash.

All you need to do is fill in a few forms.

Regarding Irish,US & UK tax it is just as easy to do it yourself. If you have to complete a form in a foreign langauage (Spain, Germany etc,) then these companies are good to use if your langauage skills are only average. These companies make a lot of money as they employ people in Eastern Europe on very low salaries (compared to our minimum wage) to do all the paperwork for you.

My advise is to contact the Irish Revenue.

I also found this on revenue website:

Am I entitled to repayment of tax if I become unemployed?
If you remain unemployed for four weeks you can claim a refund from
your local Revenue office of tax paid, by using the four weeks unused
tax credit. You can do this every four weeks until all tax has been
repaid or the tax credits are used. You cannot carry unused tax
credits forward from one tax year to the next.

If emergency tax was deducted from you, you may apply immediately for
    a refund on becoming unemployed.

To claim a refund you should ask your local Revenue office for Form
P50 (First Claim for Tax Repayment during Unemployment) (PDF 83KB)
and return the completed form together with Form P45 (Parts 2 & 3)
given to you by your former employer.

i used taxback.com before to get a refund for tax i payed while working in canada. They got me a refund but they also take a good chunk out of it, so for the other year im entitled to tax, im going to apply for it myself. Its confusing and there's a lot of info to be filled out, which is why i, and i suppose other people, use these companies.

If you're applying for tax back from Ireland, then i would never use them. The tax system is a bit more straightforward here, and if you dont know what youre doing then at least you have the option of going directly to the tax office and asking them for help
