I'v a dell inspiron 1525, just over a year old, I have to have it pluged in all the time as its out of battery and not charging, when i hover over the battery icon in the bottom corner it says 'plugged in, not charging', anyone know what the problem could be?

Are you using the originally-supplied copy of Windows with all the Dell utilities? Did you get any "Replace your battery" notifications? Re-seat the battery if you haven't already. Could be a dead battery. Do you know anybody with the same laptop/battery?

i have already re-seated the battery but no joy, my brother has the same laptop with the same problem so its seems a fairly common problem, dont think the battery is dead as sometimes (very rarely) when i plug it in it will charge.

is the battery hot? I know when I tried playing blu ray quality video it would drain my battery like a mad thing, it would get very hot, and require a good cooldown before it would charge again.

had the same problem. In fact if you Google Dell Inspiron+battery not charging, look what you get. In fairness my laptop was still under warranty, and Dell were very good. They first replaced the battery, and then called when the first option did not work. They can arrange a service call for your computer at a friend's or at your workplace if a home visit is not suitable. Only problem I had was the Dell call centre - thinks it's in Japan - or somewhere remote like that, and communication, though it was in the english language was at times very difficult. However, very good on email responses, and full marks to Jason the technician from the subcontracted technician company. So it looks like that's the route you will probably go. :D
