I haven't been in the country for a year,.

I have been reading the papers and places like this and the impressions I am getting is that the level of begrudging seems to have gone through the roof.

So are people now eying each other in pubs and tut tuting when someone orders a more expensive drink or what? Do rumors circulate about workers in some factory getting free tea?

So what is the current zeitgeist really like this or is it a media invention?

yep begrudgery is spiralling... i bought a v expensive watch recently, some jewellery and a cpl of pairs of designer high heels and oh my god friends nearly had a heart attack.... 'Don't you know its a RECESSION?' they wailed!!

that type of attitude is crazy...yeah things are tough but there is no point hoarding our money under our mattress... I wouldn't go recklessly spending money but seriously, i think everyone should relax... I'm sure someone is going to make reference to how those recently made redundant can't relax...

if we don't spend we're really screwed! I'm just helping to fix the mess!

so in answer to yr question...Ireland's begrudgery has worsened, and looking like we're facing civil unrest... Public v Private sector... ladies and gentlemen place your bets!

my son (whos 9) only this morning spotted a '09 car and said "oh look mammy, he must be a drug dealer" - i thought it was funny, thats what we used to say 12 years ago when anybody had a mobile phone

I has only been a year, so yes it shouldn't have changed at all really but the impression I get from the media and threads here is an eruption of people questioning "why they should get that?" or "they don't deserve this!"

I am pretty sure that wasn't around a year ago (or to this extent anyway).

Ireland is one of the better places in the planet, so, Be nice to each other!

Thats the meedja for you. Theres a lot of anger out there, a lot of people dont understand why they have to suffer a recession when we could have weathered it better, and of course the government is pointing the finger at anyone they can and proclaiming its 'all your fault!' and hearing it enough times, the public believe it.

Bregrudery has always being around in Ireland and what I find amusing is that it was usually the guy who had everything begrudging the guy who had nothing or little , his foot on the ladder .It used to be the keep them down mentality of the Irish pysche .Perhaps it's returned only this time with a vengeance.

Funny you say that, my other half got a new company car the other day, it's not "hers" or "mine", the company she works for owns the car. I'm insured to drive it under my own policy so I went down to the shops in it the other day and when I got my bits & pieces and went to get back into the car, this woman waiting for the space I was pulling out of, cuts me in two with a filthy look, as if to say, "it's fookers like you in your fooking 09 car that has this country in bits!". I thought she was just some auld c*nt having a bad day until I went down to another shop down the road later on that evening and the same thing happened with a man down there. Weird...

Not at all, although I wish they would as it may call a halt to my wifes penchant for Bellinis.

All those people above who say it's happening are either paranoid or are just wishing it happens so they know people notice what they've spent money on.

It's actually a misspelling. It should read Bi Now. He has decided not to withold his ministrations from either sex lest he be accused of begrudgery.

Though he may be accused of buggery.

After I leave my 14 hour a week public sector job there is nothing I like more than to get into my 09 Mercedes, and stop by my group of tenements and bedsits. I collect the rent, and then head to my palatial home. I pour myself a large glass of whiskey, light a fine Cuban with a €50 note, and rest my weary feet on the stooped back of one of the proletariat. Life is bliss.

Buying a paper to read all about the doom. Paying a TV licence to watch all the "we're so screwed" stories in case you missed any in the papers.

Going to the pub to get raped for you bottle of Heineken while you talk about the economy.

Wish to fook some aliens would land or Jesus would throw in an appearance just to break the monotony.

I don't think people are any more begrudging than they were previously. People are extremely extremely p*ssed off thought I think, to the point where I can see it all flaring up any day now and a riot happening. The country is on it's t*ts and it's more of the same, thousands of people losing their jobs every single day, while the government is literally driving forklifts loaded with pallets of cash into the banks. None of this money seems to be making a blind bit of difference to the thousands of people who are still losing their jobs every day now, because their employers are running out of cash, even though the government are saying that they are bailing out the banks to protect jobs and save the economy, but every day, the economy seems to have slipped another few inches down the toilet. That's how I'm reading it right now anyway...
