If this is the offer you're getting http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-13-42PY8E including the bluray player, then it's a cracking deal. If not then you could haggle further - the bluray player is €260 in Powercity, at €999 for the package you could try to get them down to nearer the difference (€739), although that night be too hard a haggle. Even at €999 all in it's a pretty good deal.

As for waiting for a newer model, that's always an issue. My take on it is that you're very unlikely to be disappointed with the picture quality and also very unlikely to get as good a deal on a newer model, but ultimately it's your money and you should choose accordingly.

Alliance Electic are doing that deal for €1049

Just to let you know Powercity are showing a picture of a 42py80 on that page and not the py8. Not sure if it makes a difference. Here is the py8:

Sure technology is moving so fast you will always have older technology. Panasonics do plasmas which are affordable and according to reviews are pretty good so you probably can't go wrong. Seems like it could be a good deal.
Take a look at http://www.avforums.com/ they might have a thread on the uk version of that tv the 42pz8

I'm also interested in that deal. I'm blue in the face looking at specs of various models for the past few weeks, I just want to be done with it at this stage.
Can anyone tell me whats "missing" from this model against newer LCD's/Plasmas?
I'm presuming contrast is lower on this model and I know it only has 2 x HDMI's. Anything else that I should be looking to future proof myself against?
I was gunning for an LCD due to the much lower power consumption but plasmas seem to have the edge on colour reproduction and this ticks all the boxes, 100Hz scanning, 24P playback etc...
Anyone have this model? Any advice appreciated..
    Cheers,

Thanks for the replys folks, went with this in the end.

I came away from Power City with the 42" Panny (E850) and a 26" Samsung (E400 LE26A451C1XXEU). I was pretty happy with this deal. I haven't watched a whole lot of telly on it yet but i seen the 42" with a HD signel through it and it looks very good! Glad with the price i paid, fair enough some may say I could have E50-75+ off it, but happy all in non the less.

I think at this price you can't really go wrong with this TV.

Contrast is lower on this model only compared to the other Panasonic models in the next range up, about €150 - €300 dearer depending on where you shop. But compared to LCD the contrast ratio is stunning. LCD's always quote dynamic contrast ratio, Plasma's usually quote Native.
Put another way, one LCD I was looking at recently had 30,000 contrast ration (dynamic). The Panasonic I was looking at had 30,000 native or 1,000,000 dynamic! Also Plasmas are leagues ahead of LCD's in terms of motion reproduction.
LCD's do have power consumption in the bag though!!
