Effect of recession on Irish pysche?

As its looking more likely by the day, if Ireland does go through a significant period of high unemployment, very low inflation and plumetting asset values, is there a danger we could go through a similar period to the Japanese "lost decade"? Just to remind you, houses prices now in downtown Toyko are still nowhere near their 1989 peak, almost 20 years later.

The "Japenese pysche" was always very different from Western countries but I have read some interesting articles about the effect of the last 20 years on the national pysche. Some interesting points about how a significant period of stagnating asset values changes the very way in which we think about our lives.
