    Hi all,

Im 26 and recently broke up with my girlfriend (now ex) in order to travel. So here I am half way across the world travelling....I was just wondering what you guys think of what I want to do -

I have always had a passion to sail around the world , a full circumnavigation spending days/weeks on end at sea etc and working aboard a traditional sailing vessel....So Ive done my research and I have found a place to accomodate me - I estimate it will cost €35k for approx 14 months to live out my romantic dream.

I know its a lot of money but its what i really wanna do ( i also know its probably possible to do it cheaper bit by bit)...Does it sound crazy for me to loan 35k from the bank to do this when Ive no house etc at the age of 26? honestly ?

ps I know I CAN get this money from my bank

    Thank you for your thoughts

I suppose you should do whatever floats your boat,HOWEVER since you have no assests you should be trying to find the cheapest way possible.

It depends on how much you are making/expected to make and when you will pay it back. 35K is a bit more than your average person takes for a RTW trip. I don't think it's a sensible idea unless you can pay it back within a reasonable time frame i.e. well paid job.

Part of me says go for it, but 35k is really a MASSIVE amount of money to spend.

What kind of job prospects do you have for when you get back? How long would you have to work to be able to pay this back (plus interest and taking tax into account)? You could do a RTW trip for much, much less.

Yes it would be a great trip but you don't want it to bury you.

Also, why is it so expensive? Surely if you're crewing you should be able to earn some of your passage and you wouldn't need a whole lot of spending money?

You'll spend the rest of your life making money. you can never buy back this time.

Go for it or you will regret it for the rest of your days.

Thanks plies everyone - thing is I have done the round the world trip Africa, Asia, oz, nz, south america (im not in debt by the way) but this circumnavigation is in my head 24/7

I most certainly could try making my way around the world on boats for less than 35k but its not the same type of trip which in itself is hard to explain.

i will have a job to come back to, not bad pay very good prospects but this doesnt come into it for me - the only thing coming into my mind re the finance is that suuuuurely another 35k on top of my mortgage when i come home will mean sweet fa to the experience i can look back on and tell my grandkids about

ps i have money set aside for my mortgage which im not touching

If you can get a handle on it financially then I don't see why you shouldn't go for it.

    Ah go for it!!
You seem to want it so much that if you don't, you'lll kick yourself til you're 86.

Personally, I would offer someone $5000 for each 'stage' and make my own way (and pay them in dollars!!). But if this is what you want, and you have it budgeted for, then do it.

Think of it this way. In the last 6 to 12 months a lot of people have lost €50,000 from the value of their home. And it may never reach those dizzy heights in their lifetime again. How much cooler is it that you spent that money on an amazing trip, and they lived in suburbia and lost that doing nothing?

Also, write home and tell us how you're getting on. I want to do exactly the same thing. The only reason I was doing it in stages was cause I'd crave the freedom to stay in one place for a while and I'd be afraid I wouldn't like the people on my boat or something.

    DO IT!

If you have money "put aside" under your mattress for your mortgage then I'd say you're not too worried financially speaking. It would be amazing!

Or you could maybe stow away for free?
