Good call. Don't take a shot you think might be risky and if you think you'll miss you're only going to educate a fox.

Red eyes do not neccessarily mean it's a fox as I'm sure you're well aware....they can often be white / yellowish ..etc.

I've been lamping foxes for years and always wait until I can clearly see it's a fox ....as I'm sure you do......prior to firing. Sometimes it can be obvious it's a fox at 200 metres as the outline can be seen in the outer edge of the beam...other times it's not as clear.

Got a real eye opener last week......while lamping we picked up the eyes at about 300 metres and called him in....he came in no problem.....could slighty see the red fur to side of lamp beam with the eyes shining brightly as he approached at about 150 metres ......waited, as we always do, until he was in closer range but something wasn't right as he was coming in a straight line with no hesitation....put gun down and waited to see exactly what was going on.....as he neared ....about 120 metres...we could then clearly see it was a RED SETTER!!!! .....probably lost.....came right in...within 20 metres... then turned and ran off!

An excellent lesson in reinforcing the fact that one cannot fire until 100% sure, without an element of doubt, that it is definitely a FOX.....do not take a long distance shot, if in an doubt whatsoever.

    Which is the fox?

I've had nights like that. Kinda frustrating alright, knowing they are there out of reach & not coming in. But it's part of the hunt. One night you get one, other nights you don't. We've let a few off because they were to far out or we wer not happy with taking the long shot.

As for the A, B, C, or D question. I hope never to see a fella cycling furiously across the fields & over ditches at night time. He might fall off his bike... :D

The distance between the eye's is another give away but I agree you should always wait untill you can make out the figure of a fox before taking your shot. That cat does look very menacing though!!!!
