Dead PC, Hardware techies needed!

Got given an old vintage 2002 PC to fix after it went spontaneously dead after many sessions of Bebo! I took on the project assuming the teens in the house had crashed it with Malware or Viruses...... no sireee!!!

Anyway it is a self build by a side-street pc seller so not much to on, I ripped it apart today and the main problem is there is no video out at all, no bios no nothing. Tried on 3 monitors all the same.

I then stripped it down to the bare bones leaving only the RAM, Hard Drive and no PCI cards. I am almost 100% certain at this stage that the Motherboard is fried or that the onboard graphics chipset is gone as the graphics are integrated. I am still not 100% about the processor either!

The Harddrive is intact as I hooked it up to the laptop and salvaged the data to DVD. However when it is connected to the PC it will run when it is connected to the power cable but when I connect the IDE ribbon it stops running.

The PC runs Windows ME with a 40GB HD and an AMD Athlon XP 1.8Ghz (that was one battle to get the specs without it turning on!!!) Eventually deciphered the code on the proccy. It also has 256MB of RAM. It only has a CD reader and no burner.

I can not for the life of me put it going as I have no spare parts and I swapped out the powersupply for a spare one I had and still no joy. I am also getting no beeb codes either.

In your expeirience which is kaput the Mobo or Proccy??

I usually rummage around in registrys and reformat and am known to network things spontaneously but hardware was usually ignored by me until I went for this leisuraly swim and got swept out to sea! :o

I know the advice would be to scrap but this friend of mine isn't inundated with money and she has two kids in school also:( Surprisingly eBay is not coughing up the ancient parts I'd need either.

does the motherboard make any beeps at power on?

possible it could be a few things... power supply would be most likely I'd say as it is usually the most stressed part. You can get power supply testers. Could be the motherboards also. Processor i'd think is less likely to be the problem

Doesn't sound good but could you get a lend of a compatible graphics card just to see.

No, the motherboard makes no sound at all what so ever, My first impression was the power supply and I replaced it with a spare power supply with the exact same specs and no joy! It is whittling down to the Mobo at this stage and a complete rebuild or scrapheap is more probable than sourcing a similar one, the Motherboard is a Jetway V6DP.

I have one on the way as a friend is bring his old pc around tomorrow and it will get cannibalised if neccesary. If I get graphics out on a PCI Graphic card (and she boots) then I can fit that and it will see them through another 5,000miles of beboing and youtube.

Have you tried booting it up without the RAM, if not remove it and reboot the PC you should hear a continuous beep sound when you do this, if not then the problem lies either with the motherboard or with the processor.

If you do get beeping when the RAM is removed you may have a static problem with the memory were they have dust and can get an oxidized buildup on the pins, try this:

    1. Get yourself some Q-tips cotton swabs and some isopropyl rubbing alcohol.
    2. Dip the Q-tips in the alcohol and lightly rub / clean the gold plated pins of the memory sticks (do both sides).
    3. Leave to dry and blow on them to remove any dust before placing them back on the board.

Where abouts are you Mumhaabu? I'm sure that there are loads of people on here who have perfectly servicable PC's in attics and sheds that they are not using anymore having upgraded.

Surely between us we can get one sorted out!
