    Hi,

I am new to this but could really do with some help!!! Due to get married in September 09 but have nothing booked and don't know where to start. Actually we are not even officialy engaged so going to start there.

How much typically do people spend on engagement rings? Heading to NYC next week and we were thinking of picking up the engagement and wedding bands there. Has anyone done this? If so did it work out much cheaper - where did you get them etc.

    All advice welcome

    Thanks

I dont know about new york but I bought bands in the canaries and think I may have gotten cheaper here! New York is prob much different though, I would recommend pricing here first to see what you are saving when you get there.

Next is the dress, I would arrange the dress and the venue before anything else, when dress is arranged then you can start with your colour scheme, bridesmaids jewlery, photographer, video and cake. Bands and dj also should be arranged soon. If you let us know what county you intend to get married in you may get some more information about suppliers in your area. I would look at dresses in New York also though if I was you!

Get the venue for the ceremony and the paperwork done first before even thinking of anything else!

Defo check out the dresses in NY.
My sister who lives in there is driving me demented at the moment trying to get me to pick a style of dress, because there are so many sample sales on over there at the moment!

I had a cheepo small wedding arranged in 3 months (well actually more like 3 weeks as I was ill)...obvious things are the smaller (aka less than 20) the easier it is as you do not have to have dj etc, you can just bring them to a pub afterwards! We had our reception in a resteraunt but we did get a nice cake, flowers done by mother in law and dress was off the shelf from BT's (not even an official wedding dress, it was by Ghost), photographer was my husbands uncle. My husband did spend money on my engagement ring (it cost more than our wedding  ) but the wedding rings themselves were very cheap. Good luck with your wedding!

I think the general guide for the engagement ring is 'one months wages' but of course it's different for everyone.

I would look up North for your rings. I priced my wedding band in Dublin and in the North and the difference was HUGE. It was 1/3 of the price from a jewellers in Belfast.

    Best of luck.

Huh? That combination is totally inaccurate, even "here".
Unless you walked into the jewellers with "SUCKER" tattooed across your forehead... :D

    Hi Last Min bride!

I can't help you at all but I just wanted you to know that you aren't the only one. I'm in the same boat! Trying to organise a wedding for September/October. We are hopefully going abroad - no idea where at the moment though. I do have my dress though and I would advise you to get your dress sorted out asap as they take a while to come in.

I hope you aren't as stressed out as me!

Anyways, best of luck with your planning. let us know how things work out,

    Jelly

    Hi Last Min Bride,

So how did your trip to New York go? Did you get the ring?????

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that you have plenty of time to get organised. This time last year, I had nothing organised but still had a wonderful wedding in August. As another poster said, get the big things out of the way first like venue, ceremony and dress. After that, just enjoy the rest of it. It really is great fun and I for one wish I could do it all over again.

This forum is an excellent help so ask any questions and look for recommendations before booking anything.

    Enjoy!

I would defo get the dress in New York. Even places like Macy's etc have huge floors full of dresses at a good price.

Also don't forget to book your band as it is a busy year for weddings surprisingly enough! But don't panic and it will all come together.

Also try get your hair and make-up trial done about 3 months before hand to clear up any issuees with hair colouring or skin problems!

Hey, I'm new to boards (have just been browsing for a while but first time to post) so apologies if this post doesn't come thru properly!
Have you considered using a hostel for the reception? Got engaged myself over Christmas and have booked out a hostel for September 09 so everyone can stay over, aiming for a relaxed fun wedding weekend!
