VX-177 dis-assembly

    Hi folks,

Any ideas on taking a Yaesu VX-177 apart? The TX audio is very low and has been documented on mods.dk and eham. Due to a "membrane" over the mic capsule, the audio is very low. A paper clip to pierce this membrane fixed one radio, but not on another.

So far, (according to mods.dk) I have:

Removed the on/off and dial knobs
Removed a retaining nut sourrounding the on/off and dial shafts
Removed 2 screws at the bottom of the radio in the battery tray

In theory, it should prise apart at this stage. The bottom comes apart to a point, but up top (knob/aerial/mic soc panel), there appears to be no lee-way. I don't want to force it too much if I'm missing a step.

    Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

    a bit more googling found...

Scroll down near the bottom for instructions. Apparently, you "Seperate case halves by pulling down and out with the back half". Worth a shot

be careful if the 177 is water resistant and you remove or pierce the membrane you lose that capability

    aye, good point.

I'm not too worried about that part really. If i was going to take it into the shower, I would have a sit"ye"ation :D

The nut around the antenna socket looks like a pain to get at for a good grip to unscrew. No doubt there is a special spanner out there to grip it in the two slots.

There have been a few complaints about this on forums. Surely Yaesu has copped this, but continue to install the membrane!

Yea read about it in radio user some time last year seems a big problem afaik I think they changed the spec maybe try a seperate mic if you feel uncomfortable opening it up.

I have "1" speaker mic, but 3x radios.

    I'll just take my time.
