Ive been looking at buying a couple of TV's online/up north and it looks like availabilty is dropping rappidly on the leading brands/models. Panasonic, Sony and Samsung seem to be clared out in most places.

There is alot of talk as well that with the new product lines there bringing out the prices are going to go up significantly. All thse cheap TV's noth of the border could be at an end...

the new ranges from sony & panasonic (not sure about the others) will be announced in late feb and then will hopefully be in stores by the end of march.

and yes, sterling prices are going up to compensate for the currency difference. Denon were one of the first and on the 1st Feb put their prices up by an average of 27%

Your guess is as good as mine. Its likly that TV's are going to go up in price, how much is anyones guess but 1/3 seems to be likly. Are the new ones going to be even more amazing and worht the extra cash? Dont know.

Sony TV's are certainly in short supply, the W-series (4000,4500) in particular. I tried to get one in the north but ended up paying a bit more to get it locally.

I believe Sony are launching the next generation W-series models soon (W5000, W5500), which is incredible really considering the current ones are still very new, but this is probably one of the reasons for the current stock shortages.

And rightly so. I'm not into that whole patriotism lark but i think its only fair that UK retailers pay the same for tellys as Irish retailers do, and if Irish suppliers charge Irish retailers more, Irish retailers should be able to buy their stock from UK suppliers. Then, Irish retailers should be able to charge the same as UK retailers, if only a little bit more, not the hundred's more we are being charged at present

As for the shortage of sony tvs, i heard they are closing or restructuring some of their factories or something like that.

    Thank you!

You're the first person I've come across on Boards that actually understands this properly. Everybody else says "Irish retailers are profiteering b**tards, I'm going up North".

Sony are down 95% in gross profit because of the currency fluctuations (from Yen) and that's why the manufacturers are putting prices up.

As regards new models, as I said some of them will be available in mid-late March. As a rough guide, most of what was launched at CES will make it over here with the exception of a few specs (Like VieraCAST VOD on Panasonic's) When I get the specs & model numbers of the new gear (end of Feb), I'll post it up like I have for the last few years.

Was it much more? Id be happy to pay a little more to keep the biz local but not €600 more!!

I went to a retailer locally and asked them to quote for a €5000+ deal and they haven't rang me like they said they would and they haven't returned my call reminding them to ring me!! Anyone would think we were back in the days of the Celtic Tiger.

    Panasonic's 2009 TV line-up in full
    YESTERDAY

Panasonic Viera Z1Our Forums have been buzzing with questions about Panasonic's new Viera plasma and LCD TV range for 2009, first revealed in our CES show report.

Now we can bring you a full rundown of the entire 2009 TV range for the US market, although we're still waiting for confirmation of UK prices and release dates.

We're booked on Panasonic's European press launch on February 24th, so more UK-specific details should emerge then.

There are five plasma ranges this year: the flagship Z1, followed by V10, G10, S1 and X1 (X10 in the UK). The LCD models ranges are the G1, S1 and X1.

    Wireless HD on flagship Z1
As previously reported, the Z1 models have a 1in deep panel and wireless HD connectivity, and are expected to be available in 46, 50 and 54in sizes from around April.

The V10s have a 2in deep panel, Viera Cast and THX certification, while the G10s are, like the others, Full HD designs and have 'Infinite Black' panels with a claimed contrast ratio of 40,000:1.

Further down the range, the S1 plasmas are the first to feature Panasonic's new NEO PDP design and come in a range of sizes from 65-42in. Finally, the X1 plasmas are 720p HD-ready designs, but not Full HD 1080p.

In the LCD range, the G1 is the flagship with a Full HD, 1080p 37in model and an HD-ready (720p) 32in. Next is the S1, available Stateside from March, in both 32 and 37in versions. And finally comes the HD-ready X1 series, in 19, 26, 32 and 37in screen sizes.

    UK models and prices
So far, information on the UK-specific models is thin on the ground, but it seems that prices have been given to dealers for the following plasma models (now apparently called TX-, not TH- as in 2008):

PLEASE NOTE: Model names and release dates may vary for the UK market.

Nothing there of any major interest to me I have to say, Id be happy with a PZ85B if they could be got!

Some of those do sound impressive, i have to say. I'd love to see the blacks on one of the plasma's with the claimed 40000:1 native contrast

How wonderfully ironic on the day panasonic announce 15000 job losses

Was it much more? Id be happy to pay a little more to keep the biz local but not €600 more!!

I went to a retailer locally and asked them to quote for a €5000+ deal and they haven't rang me like they said they would and they haven't returned my call reminding them to ring me!! Anyone would think we were back in the days of the Celtic Tiger.

I got the Sony 40W4500 for €1499, with a Sony Blu-ray player and 5 year sony warranty. The same TV and blueray combination would have cost me about €1300 in Richersounds (+/- a few quid depending on ex. rate!), without a 5 year warranty. Add in RS's 5 year warranty, and you're nearly at €1400 or so. So yeah, it cost a little more to go local of course, but I have it in my living room today, not waiting for it to come into stock!

That said, I've since gone to RS for a Pioneer AVR and to a UK online store for a Jamo Speaker package, saving literally hundreds overall in the process. There's definitely huge savings to be made in the more specialist stuff, such as amps and speakers.

As to the price increase for TV's, the same is happening at the moment across the projector market.

I have seen dealer pricing on a number of projector ranges increase by up to 40% over the last 2-3 weeks on brands such as Optoma, BenQ, NEC, Infocus and all the rest are to follow shortly.

An example is a €300 projector increasing to €380 trade directly from the manufactures. We have been warned that this was coming, back in Q4 2008, but never expected increases like this.

This should also make for a level playing field for Irish retailers against the UK... And as Moe & Zonda said... ABOUT TIME TOO!!!:D

I think there's more to it then exchange rates. Its being done to death by consumer orgs and biz orgs at the min but you cann't expain away 40-50% differences with exchange rate and VAT etc. I keep a close eye on the bigger shops (DID, Power City Currys, H.Norman, Sony Centre etc) and they have massive diferences between them. Also I feel that the Irish retailers haven't had the balls to push back on the wholesalers and manufacturers untill now when its really hurting them.

There are big price increses coming though in the UK but is it not likely that there will be an increase here as well?
