Is it possible to buy a for €500 that would be safe on the road. Only need to drive about 40 miles per week. Looking for something basic to take me from a to b safely.

Check Carzone.ie, or any of the other sites

Could do with a cleaning inside, but it's a good car!

Yeah its possible. Look for a micra/starlet/corolla. Make sure it drives ok and an NCT would be nice. Lots of dealers sell these off to the trade for next to nothing sold as seen. Call around a few Toyota/Nissan garages to see if they have anything cheap coming on a trade in. Small Japanese cars tend to stay in the main dealer network as they're usually driven by folks that only drive/trust nissan/toyota etc.

Yes, but the cost of the car is only the start!

    That's pretty good value there.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
