When applying for a membership of a trade union tax credit you dont have to say which union you are a member of, how then does Revenue know which union you belong to?

I would have though membership of a trade union would be confidential, are peoples names on a register somewhere?

I suppose they would have a general idea of the unions around and what professions/trades their members are. If you are in one of those professions/trades then they probably just assume it. I was never asked for proof.

They don't know is the short answer. If you're ever audited you may be asked to prove it.

Just like if you claim medical expenses relief in fairness, you don't have to provide receipts unless requested.
