Porsche cuts Boxster prices

As a Boxster owner was not best pleased to see that the value of my car is now even worse than it was already

From the Irish Times Motoring supplement today...

Porsche has dramatically cut Irish prices for its new Boxster range, with new prices for other models due later this week. The new Boxster will start at €54,950, rising to €64,950 for the Boxster S – nearly €25,000 less than the car was originally expected to cost.

The new price is likely to impact strongly on the residuals of existing cars. A 2007 used Boxster retails for around €70,000; a new one can now be bought for €54,950. The new car will also be incredibly competitive compared to its rivals, costing just €1,000 more than a 2.0-litre TFSI Audi TT Roadster. Porsche had a very poor start to the year, registering two units in January, compared to 23 in January 2008.

good news for some people I guess :o

Good news for you surely if you are intending to buy another in the future? If your planning on selling up and retiring from driving its bad news.

    Holy Schweppes !

All they need to do now is do that to the 911. Either that or a new 2+2 asap.

Goes to show how much profit they were making on Boxsters before!

It's even worse - the new Boxster PDK, comes in under the new 1k/yr tax, making it Eur400 p.a. cheaper than an 'old' (if an 07 could ever be called 'old') as well.

Oh dear........some people Won't Be Happy.........:(

No offence, but if you can afford a Boxter in the first place what the fúck are you complaining about?

Porsche are the most profitable car manufacturer in the world - they can afford to drop their prices. The reason for their profitability has nothing to do with manufacturing Porsches - they control VAG/Skoda/Seat/Mercedes. Hopefully this might mean a smaller drop across the other brands as well!

Was that aimed at me? If so, I am complaining because maybe now they are more affordable the likes of you might drive one.. For shame. Think i'll have to sell now

Everybody had high margins during the good times and many still have high prices.

Look at houses which are expected to drop to 40% less than what they were worth in September last by the end of 2010.

Everybody is affected by dropping prices not just Porsche owners.

Must be a bitch though knowing that along with depreciation another 20k just vanished.

It's aimed at any Porsche driver that complains about a price tag.

Porsche here are distributed through Porsche UK so maybe there were Euro Sterling savings that could have been passed down. How sick would you be to be one of the 20 who bought one in the last two years.

I dont get this argument that ....if you can afford a Porsche you should be indifferent to the fact that it has dropped 25k. It's not like we are in Veyron territory here with someone complaining that their €2m car can now be bought for €1.9m.

Surely if someone paid 80k for a car that can be picked up new a year later for 55k has a right to be pi$$ed off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Its people with nothing that make statements like "If ya can afford the car, why complain about the price drop". Its a crazy statement. People get money and build up some savings because they are sensible with their money and not just throwing it away. These people can then afford nice things like porsche etc. The folks shouting about rich people and their porsches are jealous although, from experience, they themselves piss more up against the wall than would comfortable keep a porsche.
I dont know any multi millionaire who would willingly throw away/ lose 25k and not be very upset about it.

Actually, I do take offence, and who pushed your button, anyhoo ?

In my experience, most people who have money have it by being prudent. Having 25-40k wiped out in one go is NOT how they Got To Where They Are Today.

BIRO - yes it does. The Porsche dealer isn't going to give you a new car at the low price AND give you over the odds for the old one. You're fubar'd either way.

    Feck that.

That 2007 black Cayman S I had looked at dropped 5k on Monday to 72k and I was going to look at it again but I think I'll hold off again.

BTW just cause you own a Boxster (or a Cayman or 911 etc) doesn't mean a 20k hit on top of a recession value on your car isn't painful.

"You own a Porsche you deserve to get everything you get" is a pretty big chip on shoulder comment to make IMO.

My guess is no. The cayman is already exceptional value for money. That said, I haven't got the foggiest about what manufacturers are doing ATM with their pricing

Unk - no way you can call the Cayman exceptional value for money when it's sister has had the legs cut from under it........

.......the SO tells me that in a garage yesterday, where they have 3 used Boxsters, and some new  - that she learned that ALL of the new Porsche models are going to be reduced shortly..........LOL wouldn't you hate to be the guy who bought one 4 weeks ago.....:(

Gosh, maybe the age of the somewhat affordable P car is on the horizon..........

    Price drops are good!

Not so nice for people who already own a relatively new Porsche, but good for everyone else. It will force the competition to mark down their prices too, i.e. the TT seems overpriced all of a sudden

Where did I say he'd give you over the odds for the old one? And he'd be a bone head to do that. My point is, you buy a Boxter for 74k, after a year it's worth maybe 60k under normal circumstances. However in the mean time Porsche took 20k off the new price. Therefore if 20k also comes off your used Porsche that leaves it worth 40k. Either way, it was about to cost you €14k to upgrade. It's simple and straight forward if you're trading against a new Boxter. You are more screwed if you're trading against another marque though, but that's not what I said in my post.

    Does it?

My question is that, if they do not drop the Cayman price, does this not make the Cayman look extraordinarily overpriced?

Sorry cant find a test with a Boxster but you get the idea.

I agree that the Porsche has more alure and now that the prices are somewhat similar(excluding service costs) I'd probably go for the Porsche also, but I wouldn't call the new TT ordinary ;)

Well I'll give you that, that one there looks like a beauty.
They are completely different looking cars though, the TT is a full on Brute where as the Cayman is well, its sleeker sexier cousin?!

The Cayman service intervals seem to be 2 years so I'm not too sure that it would cost too much extra to be serviced over say a TT.

And it's probably fair to say you'll get better service from Porsche than the muppets in Pottery Road for your TT :)

I've partially severed the tendon in my finger from the glass that's the only bit that's not on the mend just yet !

I spoke to a specialist dealer there about a car and he seems to think that while a price reduction could be coming for the 911 he's in the dark at the moment...!

tut tut, as the owner of (one of) the best quality Porsches ever built, I'd have to disagree ! Oh, did I mention they were built by Audi ? :D

And with half the Boxsters on the planet having being built by Valmet in Finland, sometime it doesn't do what it says on the tin ! :D (good car builders, the Finns, btw.....)

    yes, Isaac Agnew, iirc. http://www.agnewcars.com/Porsche/

Mind you, Mark 1 x service p.a. isn't a big deal - you could do the ferry over/back in a w/end from your end with no big expense, even if it meant travelling. GBP£225 for a 12k and GBP£325 for a 24k mile service, iirc.

Bought a new Cayman in 2007. Got a bit worred about the recession so i asked belgard about the price drops and they reckoned the new car prices would come down quite a bit so the gap will close a little. still a kick in the teeth but thats life! I would still expect to lose 10-15k if i trade up next year on what i expected it to be....also looking at bringing one in from the UK if they dont get the prices right in Dublin.... it would be hard to move away from porsche though. cayman handling is amazing and dont think i would get the same driving buzz from an audi or bmw... did have a TT before and must admit the quattro is great for irish roads and weather. havent driven the new model but it looks great - but would punt for an A5 over the TT. beautiful car.

in response to the muppet on the thread. most people who have a porsche have worked damn hard to get it and no body likes to see money go down the drain. full stop.
