Probably a dumb question, but here goes - how much hard drive is necessary for someone (not a gamer) using an iMac for general purposes, ie internet, storing photos, general word processing and the like (possibly databases for a small business at some point)? The iMac 20" is listing 2.66GHz, 2 GB, 320 GB Hard Drive, but has the option to increase that the 500 GB Hard Drive. What should I get? Want something that will be good enough to meet my needs and not slow things down. Also, can anyone tell me what is difference between 2 and 4 GB ram? I need a simple, easy to understand answer that will allow me to buy just what I need and not more or less.

When buying, I am thinking of getting MacOffice installed, or should I go with iWork'09, and possibly Filemaker? Not sure of these products either.

    Advice appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on how much extra the 500gb drive is.

I would be more inclined not not get the upgrade, and get an external hdd (500gb is going for 70-80 euros online last I checked) and use that for time machine and extra storage.

Depends on how much to upgrade. I saw a 1TB external advertised last week for €90. Not sure how easy it is to upgrade RAM on the new iMacs, but I would be getting 4GB to future proof it. Apps will open more quickly, better for video editing, photo editing etc. Makes the whole system snappier. Last I heard Apple had gone pretty competitive on factory installed RAM. Have a look at Openoffice or Staroffice or ThinkFree office (full version on this month's Macformat) as a free alternative to M$ office.
