This might be of interest to anyone with MKVs, ISOs etc that they want to stream to their console:

Lads, ive being using a program called TVersity, very simple and straight forward, just google TVersity ,and you should get the site.

I had problems with the media player streaming, it wouldnt pick up all my library and playback of some files wouldnt work, the TVersity seems to have solved it, cant complain anyway

tversity is brilliant. i couldnt find one that worked and my mate came round and installed this for me. only prob i have with it is if you download somethin to your pc/laptop (legally of course) you have to restart laptop to refresh the tversity files on ps3.

peadar do u no if there is a way round this? its probably somethin simple?

Yeah i set up PS3 media server last night.

I did have to install a new windows component to get it to work.

    Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs - >Windows Components ->

-> Networking Services - > Internet Gateway DDCC and UPnP UI.

Otherwise the PS3 doesnt see the media server.

Works great though for MKV and Xvid files.
You choose on the XMB itself what trancoding you want ie
There are different files for each transcoding of the same video.

Tversity doesn't support the Mac unfortunately. Not sure how it handles MKVs or 5.1 either.

I've been using the google one for a while, but i'm gonna go back to tversity because its easier to refresh the shared files. Just look for where you name the files/folders to be shared, there's a little refresh icon and it works grand. The google one i have has to wait for google desktop to re-index the folder, which is annoying if you're in a hurry to watch something.

Noob Question; What exactly is a Ps3 media server?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭robertdempsey

    Good evening all,
I have been using TVersity now for a good few months and I love it but within the last week or so it just stopped working.. here's the details

. Installed the latest TVersity application
. Turned off my windows firewall
. Uninstalled AVG (just to be sure)
. Enabled the 'Media server connection' on PS3
    . Have latest PS3 update (v.2.60)
. Did all the above on laptop (XP) and PC (Vista)
    . Wired connection to interweb.
. Tversity sharing as been enabled

Each time I connect into my PS3 it just comes back saying 'No media servers were found'. I have ran out of ideas and came to a complete dead end.
I think my next step is to get a lend of another PS3 and see if its the console but I dont think it is as I can browse the web on it and connect to the PS3 network.

I've searched all the help docs and nothing works.. any suggestions??

    Fixed the issue.
Even though I have a wired connection it still goes into the MAGNET router... this router is hidden away in a box on the wall so I just upplugged the router for a few minutes... its always the same... spend days trying to sort a problem and a simple plug in/out does the trick lol.

like everything else, its a matter of opinon.

i've used tversity since i've gotten my ps3 and have never had a problem with it, which is why i recommend it to friends, who then use it and have no problems with it.

I installed the google player software on my laptop the other night which is hooked up to my local network via a wireless router. All I had to do was add my media folder to it's folder selection and hey presto the PS3 picked it up no bother. I am quite impressed with how easy it is to use and I cannot see any marked difference of quality between streaming it to the PS3 and copying the avi file to a usb key and playing it directly. I think I'll be using this software from now on rather than the USB key method. Great find !!

Well i usually click on the library tab in TVersity, and then click the folder oyu want to update, and it should do it automatically.

You can actually set the program to check for any media additions to your machine at a specific time, or at set intervals, just click on settigns and its in that menu smewhere

Try'd it for a second time and seemed ok, but like a lot of people it would crash on me when i try'd to play mkv's. Un-installed it.

you can't play mkvs on ps3, they have to be converted first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Is that not the point of TVersity, it converts/transcodes them on the fly

having just gotten a new pc, i installed the google one last night to check it out.

can't say i was all that impressed tbh, there was a lot of pauses during playback, took ages to load a file, and didnt seem to like playing files from my external hard drive at all.

back to tversity when i get home i reckon

Hi I have Nat 1 and am trying to get media sharing to work. I have a Netopia router and wondering if it is possible?

Not possible on NAT1. You are connected directly to the Net and thereby bypassing your network.

You must be NAT2 or 3 for it to work. Buy a different router other than eircoms one. A netgear or linksys. Do a search in this forum, there are a few examples with links here. Good luck

I'm using the PS3 media server for a while now but only latly been noticing it's been skipping a lot during playback. Is there any reason for this or would there be any settings that could improve it. I see above people suggesting another media server called TVersity so might give that a go this evening and see is there any improvement.
