    Hi guys

is night vision equipment legal in Ireland? I know one can hunt master fox with lamps, but am not a big fan (German upbringing probably ;) ). A night scope, once I can afford it, would be nice though ...

You can use night vision to spot quarry no problem but you cannot mount it to a firearm unless you get a permit from the local super .

how likely is that to be forthcoming?

I personally don't know anyone that has one so I can't answer that one.
But just imagine the super hearing night vision scope and all the strange things going through his head at the very thought of it.:D:D

It seems that they are rising in popularity all the time.
I know for a fact that fewer lamps are seen shining in the valleys and glens around me at night but you still hear the crack of rifles!!!.

As for getting permits for NVE, all thats needed is a good reason to justify a piece of kit which is becoming more and more popular all the time.
The cops are going to have to get over their Hollywood ideas fast and unless they are constantly approached by Irish shooters this will not happen.

Speaking of hollywood ideas, how many times have those who've used them posted here that NV scopes, unless you can somehow get hold of exceptionally expensive third-generation stuff from the US (which they don't export), aren't really of all that much use?

I wonder how Joe Spuer would react if one wanted one of those. "And how are you planning of getting hold of one of them then?" "I have freinds in low places Super" "oh you do? want to tell me more?"

Well, you could get an NV binoculars/monocular without the local Garda Super's permission; and Aldi/Lidl do sell them quite cheaply from time to time; so you could get one and take it out and see would an NV scope be of any use to you. Grizzly's posted on this topic from time to time, and his conclusion always has been that they're pretty much useless for hunting.

I think there might be a mild element here of "the super said I can't have it, so I must have it" instead of "is it any use to me?". (Actually, to be fair, I think we see that all over, not just on the topics of NV scopes, sound moderators and so forth; and equally to be fair, the answer to 'is it any use' is sometimes a resounding yes; I'm just saying it might not always be so).

Unless you have somebody in the US to post you the stuff ;)

Yeah, then you'd be in violation of US federal law, wouldn't you?
Methinks that might be of some concern to you and the fellow who posts it to you...

I know that for stores and business is a violation to federal law to export same items but not sure what the says about a personal gift from a friend to another.
I will try to find out the law in black in white to see what says with all letters, the last thing I what is to induce somebody to break the law:o

    Dear Super,

I am just applying for a .223 semiauto rifle by armalite with a T4 moderator and a nightvision scope. You see I can get them from some Hick friends of mine from the states, that are coming to visit soon and we plan on having some gud fun!;)

I know what my super would do :D

I run a quick search in to the law and I run across this guys who can export same types of night vision stuff .

    http://www.nightvisionus.com/international-export/riflescopes-export

they are generation 2 type and a little expensive for the old continent but the way the dollar is you never know...:D;)

Night vision is like all the other myths around, as far as I can make out. There's absolutely no reason you can't have it, or have permission to store powder and primers to reload ammunition, but you have to be prepared to bow to security concerns, provide a good reason to be allowed have it, and bend over backwards to appease your Super. If you've got a good reason (and a stupid amount of cash - from what I've read any NV stuff that isn't absolute crap runs into silly money) then you can make a good case for it. Same as if I get into competitive fullbore rifle, I'll make a damn convincing argument for the permission to store powder and primers, whether we have new provisive legislation or not at that stage. Because it's not illegal, there just aren't a lot of reasons good enough to get permission for it.
