    Hi all,

I need broadband and digital tv and had planned to get a package from UPC. But I have just found out that the area I am in, in Cork (Rochestown), does not support UPC!

So, could anyone suggest an alternative to me. My house has a land line but it is not connected and if possible I dont want to extra cost of line rental (hence the previous decision to go with UPC!). So can I get broadband from any other supplier without a phone line? And if not, suggestions for a low cost supplier with land line required?

And I presume Sky is my only other option for digital tv?

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

Freesat is another alternative, basically you use a satellite dish and receiver and can receive over 80 channels (including all the BBC's, ITV's, C4's and C5's) for absolutely free (after the once off cost for sat dish, receiver and install of course).

Details of channels on it here: http://www.freesat.co.uk

No RTE or TV3 on this unfortunately, you will need to continue to use an aerial for these.

As for BB, you will likely need to get the phone line connected and unfortunately pay line rental if you want decent BB. The only alternative is fixed wireless BB, but that can be troublesome.

I use Digiweb Metro for Broadband (no cable or phone line) and a number of FTA satellite receivers and a Sky Box with no Sub (Free channels). In Cork if you have signal it's as good as Cable or DSL(phone line).

TV aerial for 4 Irish channels, perfect pictures.

    No Free channels on Cable.

    Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Anyone use Magnet Entertainment? Is it available in Cork?

Magnet's TV service is only available in very specific new apartment and housing developments (usually built in the last 3 years) that are wired for Magnets fibre to the building service. It isn't generally available.

Also the TV service isn't well regarded, well short of Sky.

Magnet's ADSL2+ service is slightly more available, but not by much, just enter your phone number on their website to check. However you will still need a phone line for this.

Absolutely forget TV + Broadband in one package unless you WANT to pay extra for TV and can get UPC (Chorus/NTL). All the other combo TV/BB are much worse TV than UPC, which is not as good as Satellite (free or pay channels).

Concentrate here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=259 for Broadband options.

    I moved one post there.

Any posts about Broadband will be moved there.

These forums http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=40 are for TV reception.

Do look at the Satellite Forum and Terrestrial Forum
