Remote Connection - Help

I got a call from a friend tonight in London who's pc has gone awol on her, I tried talking to her over the phone but I just can't get her to do what is needed. (she is trying to configure a new webcam and get it working with Skype and it is very difficult!) for her at least!!! I signed up for a trial of logmein.com but her pc would not connect to mine!

I wonder could remote desktop connection be used? I am on Vista and also have an XP pc Home edition and my friends pc is also XP home edition.

It would be connecting directly over the internet and both I and her have broadband connections so no problem. She is on Aol 2 megs 202up and I am getting over 14mbps from Eircom with 1meg up.

If there is any for dummys guide to do this it would be great as the logmein.com would have been great except it was a trial and would not work and I don't feel like paying over $1,000 for to setup up Skype for my friend. I think she is using the AOL browser which appears to be the root of the problem.

    any help would be great!!

VNC and Remote Desktop technologies require ports to be forwarded on your friend's router, a task I doubt she would find easy given her webcam troubles.

If you think it's the browser, why not get her to use Internet Explorer with LogMeIn?

See also GoToMyPC - I believe they have a free trial on these days also.

yes you could try remote assistance but I have found it unreliable in most instances.

OP i have provided short instructions here http://www.nenaghpc.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

AS mentioned earlier this will involve a port forward - in this case a port forward of port 5900. If you find out the model number of her router you could possible talk her through that.

What happened when you tried logmein? Its hadnt let me down to date.
