What is the best photo organising/editing software?

I have used Picasa in the past. It's good but I'm wondering is there any better programs for this?

For editing you can use GIMP or Gimpshop.

For organising I've used Picasa myself but never felt the need to use organising software really.

Adobe lightroom is a beast if you're willing to pay but there is a free trial so you could check it out, might be a bit overkill if its just for simple tweaks.

Windows live photo gallery is ok too, very picasa like but with a hell of a lot more online storge to upload to.
