The Vinny Feeney thread got me thinkin, what my first boxing experiences where - here they are, what are yours?

First boxing memory - probably being allowed to stay up til all hours listening to big fights on the radio with the brothers and ould fella - early 80's

First TV memory - McGuigan v Juan La Porte mid 80's - the fight that really got me into the sport was the Pedroza fight

First live boxing - watching older brothers fighting in amatuer shows in Sligo and around Connaught, probably mid 80's

First live pro show - its was not until 1996 that I saw my first pro bout (just shows you the state of Irish pro boxing during that period) it was the McCullough v Bueno fight but I was really there to see Vinny Feeney

First boxing memory - Matt Talbot boxing club age 7-8. Seeing my cousin fight.

First TV memory - Tyson v Bruno 1. I remember the excitment like it was yesterday.

First live boxing - Apart from Matt Talbot club, probably the NS in 92? Remember seeing Damean Kelly fight, smashing boxer.

First live pro show - Collins in 95 at the Point. Great card I thought. Just remember my eyes been glued to the ring.

Great thread by the way Sligo

First boxing memory: After the Spinks / Ali upset (1978 I believe), telling my friend I was Ali and he was Leon Stinks. Aaahhh the innocence.

First TV Memory: Sports Stadium on a Saturday afternoon when they'd show the previous night's action from the Stadium, usually internationals.

First Live Boxing: A show where myself and my brother made our (winning) debuts.

First Live Pro Show: Wayne McCullough's first pro fight in Ireland in the National Basketball Stadium.

First TV memory - Tyson beating bruno, also McCullagh & Carruth at the olympics.

First live pro show - Jaysus i think it was actually Bernard Dunne against Jim Betts in the stadium

First TV memory - I think it was Camacho-Boza Edwards. I was a macho fan
right from then; now I believe he was overrated

First live boxing - I would say as a 7 or 8 year old possibly younger My dad
was a big amateur fan and went to the Seniors every year.
I believe it was either Collins winning his senior title in '86?
I know I was there before, but cannot recall. It may well
have been Paul Fitzgerald or Sutcliffe in '84

First live pro show - aint ever been I believe. I can't remember, so it must
    be a no!

Ah for feck sake Bren, just suck it up and go to the dunne fight, the atmosphere does be great, and with it been the 1st boxing in the new o2 it is a historic thing too..

Paul, I would defintely consider it but I don't want to be some 'dot' at the back of the arena. I would go if I could guarantee a decent seat where I can actually see the action without strain!

Anyone know the O2 layout and the tickets left and all that.
Is it a good good chance that you may only
get tickets that will not get you a good view?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,365 ✭✭✭✭walshb

seriously!! you've never been to a pro fight?

Yes, I much rather watching live events on TV. I am just not into the
whole 'dot' at the back desperately trying to see action. Same for concerts and stuff, National stadium is a little different, It's seating is brilliant
and I was brought up on it!

But still didn't get to a pro show. And IMO, Peter's and CO are conmen!
    They're not worth it

Bren i was at the ufc and at the back and the view for the string elements was perfect, for the grappling it was o'k but not great, so the boxing will be good no matter where your sitting.

i got tickets in the back tier again and am not worried about the view at all, ps, my vision is quite good so obviously that has to be factored in!

Thanks Paul, gotta decide now if I want to be contributing to that Peters merchant. To be honest, the highlight for me would be seeing Taylor
    in action, **** Dunne!:D

The 1 thing i'll say about peters is wheter you like him or not he has brought irish boxing back into peoples living rooms and put on shows that regardless of talent have entertained many boxing fans, the only dunne fight i missed was the kiko 1 as i was fighting myself-and they where all a great laugh..

It will be hard to get top class boxing in ireland anyway as the population is way smaller than britain and the ppv would not suit america..we're doing ok, at least pro boxing is on offer, when i was growing up it was a rarity that you could get a pro boxing match in, at least now there is a choice..

I am not doubting the atmosphere. I doubt the quality on show.
I don't think it is at all class. That's just me, and certainly not worth
    paying for!

I will gladly watch it on TV free of charge.

How far back are you talking there cowzerp? ive been front row of the balconies in the point and thought the view was pretty ok. Howe would the back seats at the 02 compare with these? I hear they go pretty high up.

i'd say its better than the view from the balcony, i was the furthest corner away and as i said the striking was perfect to watch.. Its quite compact tbh.

Walshy \o/ Cant believe you've never been to a pro fight. The atmosphere is the business. You have to go, mate seriously.
