Have put one of these (Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150) into my PC.

Have Vista, so I started up Windows Media Centre and went to the setup TV bit.

    Everything ran ok, no errors.

Set up NTL as the provider and Analogue over cable as the connection type.

EPG is all in there and all the programs etc..

But when I flick through the channels the screen is blank. There is a flicker of sound when I change to some channels but just for a second.

On one channel I got the top section of a frozen picture and a maybe a third of the screen was green.

Am I missing something simple. Good CPU and memory spec and GPU is a NVIDIA 9600GT

I have tricked about some more.

For sky1 the picture updates every minute or so and the sound flicks on every couple of seconds but it is little more than a squak.

    No other channels are working.

I intalled GB-PVR and setup the channels manually but they are all very poor i.e. little better than what I am getting on Media Centre for Sky1

    Any general thoughts?

Do the channels work when the cable is plugged directly into a TV?

Yes they do, with an average reception

Only guessing but the TV signal could be too weak. Try using a TV signal booster. Argos or Powercity have them. Or if you have a VCR, have the coax into that and then run another cable from the VCR to your PC. VCRs usually boost the signal before outputting it.

Have found with gbpvr that it doesn't automatically fine tune the channels. Only way I can think of getting around this is to do a registry hack which makes the channels closer in frequency to what they should be. Have done this before and need to do it on one of my machines tonight so will paste details here if I get it done. Might or might not help

as mentioned by other poster, try a booster as it sounds like a weak signal.

Thanks for the advice. I will get a booster.

I have a dual boot and I am also running ubuntu.

So I downloaded and setup mythbuntu and it can pick up the channels with a reasonable reception. I need to weed out all the duplicates and the ones that are not tuned in and then setup some sort of EPG if I am going to use it.
