Can one change from Standard to Compact Just by changing the rings

Was reading the cervelo q-rings things and it got me thinking. Is it possible to change from compact to standard just by changing the rings on the cracnks... I have Ultegra SL.

I enjoy riding compact but for some reason standard seems 'feel' (in true euro fashion) better.

nope. different bcd. compact is 110, race is 130 (i think).

you can get a new crank and chainring combo and swap them without changing your BB though, and your front derailleur will have to be moved. it's something i've considered myself but, tbh, swapping cassettes is so much easier and i've yet to find a situation where 50x11 wasn't plenty.

B.C.D.. Bolt Circle Diameter (had to look that up). Well acutally can't I just buy rings that are the corrct diameter. 130mm

Generally compact cranks and standard have different BCDs. If you can find full size chainrings in 110mm BCD, then I don't think there will be a problem. However, I've a vague recollection that there's a maximum size 110mm BCD rings can go up to.

sure, but you won't be able to attach them to the compact crank spider.

Yes you can, but 130mm chainrings are not compact.

Wait, do you want to go standard to compact or the other way around? Your thread title says one, and your post says the other.

had forgotten about it till now but i remember in last year's vuelta that many of the pros were using a 53/34 combo on the angleru (sp?). i think sram may have specially manufactured a 110bcd 53t chainring for the occasion. does anyone make and sell something similar? if 110bcd 53/39 setups exist i'd be interested.

I remember the Angliru stage, and the commentary said that they were specially manufactured chainrings that weren't available to the public, as they were very difficult to move from the big ring to the smaller one, but on that stage they were only shifting into the small ring once, so it wasn't a problem for them

yeah, that's what i remember too. a 53/34 setup is pretty crazy and not something i'd seek out. but if someone out there were to manufacture a 53/39 on 110bcd, well, that'd be cool.

probably be a bit flexy though...

Stronglight compact rings go up to 52 teeth.

I'd imagine you'd also have to check the rear derailleur capacity to make sure it could handle the longer chain (if you're going from compact to standard).

hmm. that might be something to experiment with once i get some fitness back. 52/38 or something. would you reckon these rings are any good? any shifting or durability concerns?

i don't think the rear derailleur would care one way or another right? a double is a double so cage length would be an issue, i would have thought. i'm, as ever, open to correction though.

RD capacity shouldn't be an issue. It's more to do with how much slack it can hold, which comes with wide variations in top and low gear, e.g. with a triple.

I've read that some aftermarket chainrings don't have the same ramps and pins on them as the standard ones. That could mean that front shifting is a bit sloppier.

Fair point. If you were switching from double to compact would the 2T difference in going from a 53/39 to a 50/34 be enough to make any odds?

I had an FSA Carbon Compact Pro Elite crank with 50/34 and 110 BCD.

I was able to get FSA 52/38 rings for it at 110 BCD. Never heard of a set of compact 130 BCD rings. I reckon it would be far more expensive to buy such a niche item, and I wouldn't bother.

Even when I got the bigger rings for the FSA cranks they still cost 100 euro. I could have gotten a full FSA Carbon Team crankset in 53/39 from CRC at around 150 euro !!

Sounds like it might be a better idea just to buy another crankset you can swap. I'm in a similar situation with a Dura-Ace 7800 53/39 which is grand for the worst Wicklow has to offer but I'm thinking I would like to stick on a compact for the Marmotte where the hills are a little longer. Are my only options the Shimano cranks, if I don't want to change the bottom bracket?

HTFU and do it on a standard double... don't forget I neat you up the Glandon on a compact, when you had a triple!

-yeah, it's goading, but you can defo manage the marmotte on a std double!

I just contacted Condor Cycles in the UK and they said that I would be able to buy the chainrings for a standard set for 75 and fit them. They said that I would have the problem of not being ablt to fit the rings. They are a Shimano Plus dealer so I might give it a try and see.....
