Driving over a snow/ice/slush covered canal bridge

Any tips?? I had to drive over one last night coming home from work and my car (Yaris 1.0) was so close to just stopping and/or starting to slide backwards. I managed to get up and over it but was wondering if there were any tips or advice anyone had? It seemed to be causing problems for a lot of people as traffic was at a standstill up until the bridge and then clear afterwards. Took a snow day tomorrow but still snowing heavily here and can't really take two days in a row so will have to try and face it :(

Id avoid it if possible. If not and its dead straight id go over it in a high gear at a high enough speed for the momentum to carry you over it with little or no accelerator. Low gears like 1-2 will just cause the wheels to spin and a lack of control. Dont know what the bridge is like so thats the theory of what id do.

Avoid like the plague would be my advice. Or if unavoidable. Leave a run up to the bridge to pick up some momentum, keep the revs low 1000/1200 in 3rd if possible in a petrol yaris or equivalent and go over it as straight as possible, and very easy does it coming down the other side.
Do not stop before reaching the top of the crest, as you are in serious roll backwards territory.

Yep, you should be aiming to drop into first gear as you crest the bridge, to control your descent. Don't brake.

To see how NOT to do it, see this thread:D

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

At least you have a front wheel drive which is much more effective in snow/frost.

Those of us with rear wheel drive are having great fun! :D

If traffic is moving and there are no reds lights to stop you on the bridge then back off a bit from the car in front. This will allow to get over it at a good speed.

You don't want to be stopped uphill on a steep bridge with no grip and a car up your ass. It'd stress anyone!

If it goes wrong for you then blame everyone but yourself :D
