Stereo replacement in a 200o corolla

I've just bought a 2000 Corolla and the stereo doesnt seem to be working. I want to replace the radio cassette thats there anyway with a CD player with an MP3 player connection. The unusual thing about the set up is that the radio and the casette bit seem to be on seperate parts of the dash. The radio is at the very top and has a display of the outside temperature, clock etc built into it. The cassette bit is furthr down below the air conditioning controls. Which part of this needs to be replaced? Id prefer the bottom bit and to keep the top as it is, but I dont know if this is possible?

    Thanks :)

The neater option would be to replace the top unit with a DIN adaptor (this was actually fitted to Corollas between 97-00 - before VVT-i) and replace the cassette unit with a universal DIN sized storage box (widely available) you will also need an ISO to Toyota loom adaptor.

looks wrong having 2 radio units installed, an as far as I remember if you wire in a 2nd radio, you lose the trip computer/clock function anyway.

I replaced the radio on my 00 Corolla. The car I have doesn't have the big door below the heater controls instead it has a radio unit with the cassette there and a high level display for radio info. The radio unit can be replaced with a standard DIN radio. You just need a Toyota Corrolla to ISO adapter, can be got in Halfords or cheaper elsewhere. My car had a storage box below the radio and that just went straight back in.

When you change the radio you loose the all radio bits on the upper level display. But outside temp, time and MPG/MPH parts of the display all still work.

correct, the pre 00 Corolla had a double DIN storage box, the post 00 had a single DIN box and a single DIN cassette unit. the cassette unit can be replaced with a single DIN box, the dashboard of the older models tends to be a different colour to the newer ones, so using the double DIN from an older Corolla isn't really an option.

You could also just leave the casette unit in place, it won't do anything, but it'll fill the gap in the dash!

Where can I buy the DIN adapter?

Toyota dealer is the best bet if you want the plastic colour to match your dash.

I surfed around cartoys.com and found a forum there. They had posted that you don't need any dash kit etc. just ISO DIN adapter and then just fit it in the factory plastic dash.
I don't know if anything I say makes sence.

But in the picture you posted in this thread the upper part where the new cd-player is mounted in is different than the factory one isn't it?
