ive been trying for 3 weeks to find someone to work on a roof , re-slate, and some plastering, also to build a wall. Everyone is too busy , some never even turn up. Have tried the papers, friends, etc.

Where are all the out of work builders/ construction people who would bite the hand off you for work

where are you in the country - the problem now is that as a lot of construction firms have gone there is going to be a shortage of workers. One surveyor i was talking to was telling me that last sept/Oct if an open job came out for tender perhaps up to 70 would have been pricing it - now its more like 15 or so.

I wouldn't say you're far off. From what I've heard for a friend working in travel, there's been a large amount heading over for work.

I was talking to a guy who got a pricing on a new fire place and chimney. I can do the job, says the supplier, 3 months ok? That was 5 months ago, the guy is working flat out...

    am in cork....

Id say an independant worker could do this work...dont need a team of workers... so who are the 200,000 people on the dole.

A guy came to me about 2 weeks ago and asked if i had any carpentry work. I asked about doing a wooden floor for a 13sq yd room.
He said 300 euro = materials. - this guy said he was desperate for work...he would not even budge on the price, said it would not be worth it.

few friends of friends coming home from Oz, went out in Nov, had some cash, done the hol thing, went to settle for a job and couldn't get one, few others have mentioned it, work seriously drying up out there now, from what i've heard anyway...prob a bit off topic!

I'd say they are the folks who are not allowed to take up casual self-employment because of the regulations affecting their benefit. Oh, and they probably don't have the tools needed. And most certainly aren't insured to be working on roofs.
