    Hi All,

Since its once every 5 years, I wouldnt mind spending the full grand for the Cycle to Work Scheme.

Can people post their recommendations here?

Should I got for a cheap custom or a prebuilt?

Personally I am looking for a road bike with decent gear shifts on the brake (dont know what they are called sorry).

Wait until the sales next Christmas?

Almost all the cheap 08 stuff is gone now.

€1,016.23 for carbon frame and Ultegra is unlikely to be beaten until next year. The equivalent 09 model is currently €1,778.91.

Nah, restricted by the finance dept on this one. Will be a month at least before I can buy.
    Just need benchmarks.

    Nice bike though.

I think you're missing my point. The 08 bike is only available in size 50 - everything else is sold out. So unless you're Bernie Ecclestone you'll have to go 09 and pay more, or wait for next years' sales.

No I get it :) I am just saying that I cant buy anything for at least a month. So anything I do buy has to be on now prices.
I know I cant get what you listed there, I will have to settle for less. Still though I would like some ideas of said lower quality bikes.
I am a newbie, so I dont know if buying parts and assembling is possible for me.

I looked at that bike myself. Only problem with it is that they only have it in extra-small!

    Except that's €1,218.07.

For a few quid less there's the Kiron Scandium.

It's only got 105 though, and less carbon, but it's arguably prettier.

Not at all -- they all work.

No they don't - they've got no pedals just holes where the pedals should be !!!

Nope. In fact, Shimano technology trickles down from Dura-Ace to Ultegra to 105, so newer 105 can be almost equivalent to older Ultegra. I'm not too sure of the exact details though like how long it takes technology to trickle down. I think the Cayo 2008 uses Ultegra 6600 (2006 Ultegra). I know Shimano have 2009 Dura-ace on the market (Dura-ace 7900) but I'm not sure if they have 2009 Ultegra and 105 (which would most like be labelled 6900 and 5900 if I'm interpreting the part numbering scheme correctly).

AFAIK Ultegra is still 6600 (double) 6603 (triple) or SL.

    105 is 5600 (double) or 5603 (triple).

They have 2009 105, part numbers are unchanged.

Ahright. How do you tell 2009 105 apart from older 105 when buying it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

I may be completely wrong here but AFAIK if the part numbers didn't change, the components didn't change, e.g. if a 2008 component bears the same part number as the 2009 component they are the same. Dura Ace DID change this year and went from 7800 to 7900. The 8 and 9 do not correspond to the year BTW, Dura Ace was on 7800 for a good number of years before 2008.

That's what I would have thought as well, the bit about the part numbers changing when the components change that is.

They introduced 105 in black this year and the part numbers are identical to the part numbers that are also in silver. The parts may have some minor modicifications too (105 is also a few years old I think).

Yes, part numbers only change when the components are updated.

To the OP, http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Giant_SCR_1_Road_Bike/5360037570/ is a good option. It is below the 1k mark but once you add in rack, bags, mud guards, lights, it does come up pretty close.

Thanks man, could that one be used as a weekend racer?

Wouldnt mind getting back into it, even if the weather over here makes it hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭Ryaner

I don't have experience racing. This was first road bike with my other bike being a hard tail mountain bike. It does seem light enough and strong enough. Wheels only required a tiny adjustment after the first few days but been perfect since.

I'm sure some of the more experienced people here would be able to tell what is required to race.
