00 Polo 1.4 - eating temp senders

My mother's little 1.4 Polo has gone through 2 temp senders in 3 months. Admittedly, the first one may have been in there for years, but I had an EML light on in October, read the diagnostics, P0116 which is a temp sender fault - I replaced the sender, deleted the code and it was fine. This week, it was running rough as a badger's arse, EML light on, read the diagnostics and P0116 was back again. Replaced the sender again, and now it's fine.

Any ideas why it'd go through 2 senders so quickly?

Might the replacement sender have been faulty? Otherwise, might there be an intermittent break in the wiring to the sender?
