jaysus, i did a dive a few months ago. would not have liked this to happen. one of the girls in my group was doign the dive too and her chute didnt open. had to use the spare.

But i suppose, if you didnt panic, you could just pull the cord yourself. Still be quite a shock though.

Still, on my list of great ways to die, freefall is at the top, followed very closely by in the sack.

I did a few with the IPC near edenderry a few years ago too. I'd love to get back into it, its wicked !! :)

I remember one time I was there, this girl, who was very experienced, had a malfunction like that and had to use the reserve too. She was as white as a sheet when she landed.

    not nice

Before you do anything like this, you still go through fairly comprehensive training on how to release both chutes, how to untangle and so forth. In reality, in a tandem jump there are only a limited number of things which can go wrong:
    Your chute gets tangled
    Your chute doesn't release
    Your reserve doesn't release
    The other guy dies
    You die

And they do prepare you for all of these eventualities. Except maybe for you dying.

I was never told anything about how to open the chutes or what to do if the guy strapped to my back decided to have a heart attack on the way down when I did my tandem jump. There was another guy jumping with us who had a video camera attached to his helmet though, so I guess if anything went wrong he'd have sorted us out before I splatterd on the ground.

    Maybe.

Same here. Basically its all up to the instructor to get you down safe, but what happened in the OP is just really unlucky, what are the chances ?

If your tandem guy dies you would be in a fairly bad situation - assuming you did manage to pull the correct cord the position of the chute controls would be a bit higher than you to be able to grab them easily so you'd have no control over where you landed.

If you ended up in water you'd be dead for sure.

Then the landing would be a problem too, your carrying dead weight (no pun intended) on your back so thats going to come down on you as soon as you hit the ground, usually at a little bit of speed so you'd be likely to break a bone or two assuming everything else went right.

I can't find a video of it yet, but on the Ski Sunday program High Altitude the other week they had Ralf Little doing a tandem dive down the side of the Eiger. The tandem partner with him had the chute all tangled up as they were coming down so they were spinning around all over the place as he tried to sort it out before they hit the ground. Ralf was completely oblivious to the reason that they were spinning around in circles though and thought the guy was just having a laugh.

That sounds pretty frightening. I don't think I would ever be able to sky dive. The idea of jumping out of a plane at altitude seems pretty crazy to me, when there are so many other ways of enjoying oneself without having to risk ones life. Then again, I suppose that is half the fun of it.

Doesn't the chute open automatically once you get below a certain height. The other night on tv they showed a guy who broke his neck on the way down because he ran into someone else. He was a camera guy too.

He was paralyzed instantly but his chute opened on auto and saved his life.

That would only be certain chutes linked to altimeters, afaik all chutes definitely don't have this feature.

Usually thats a static line jump - i.e - Theres a physical line connecting you to the plane and once you reach a certain distance from the plane the line tightens and pops the pull for the parachute open so you continue on with the 'chute open and the line stays connected to the plane having done its job.

No it was deffenatly something linked to the altimeter the chute didn't open till the very last minute. He didn't bumb into the other guy till half way down either, he hit the other guy at full speed trying to catch up to him.

yeah you're right, one of my instructors had a chute like that, mad expensive.

The altimeter detects sudden change in air pressure, or something like that, and once under a certain altitude opens automatically.
Holy crap, what happenerd that guy!

After a rapid and violent bowel movement, I think he ditched the chute and opened his reserve, and then landed safely. :D

we all know the guy was saved by the r0f1k0pt3r but they cant release this info for obvious reasons...

Ah don't worry Neil1984, go ahead and do it, it's the best buzz you'll ever have in your life, really it is :)
It's been a while since I did one now, and only ever did about 10 static line jumps, but the training in the IPC is first class. Tbh the adrenalin kicks in when you're on the way up in the aircraft, and when the door opens, you'll just get a tap on the shoulder, and you just step out.

    It's fcuking BRILLIANT !! :D:eek:

    have a look here
