We tried snowboarding in roundwood today - wasnt great- too small. Anyone have any suggestions of good spots to go?

I tried to go up Mt. Leinster yesterday but the road was too tricky to get up really high. So it was pretty crap. Not enough of a base so you were sinking down to grass quite a bit. :(

The wicklow gap is a great spot. Ive been there before a few times but i heard its impassable with snow at the moment, so you'd probably have to hike up quite high.

we had a good session. Car had to be pushed in and out of our parking spot though. Snow is well deep

Boarded down off fairycastle, snow conditions are superb, no point in going to the top, its fairly flat, around half way up is really good, you can also board down the road.

I climbed Maulin yesterday from Crone woods, the snow was fantastic, several feet deep in the forest too.

But I wouldn't go near Wicklow without 4 wheel drive at the moment, I had to abandon my car as simply could not get back up various hills out of the valley and ultimately ended up in a ditch. There were at least four other cars in the same boat.

So where's all the pictures then people?

I went up Glencree way yesterday. Definitely don't recommend going with out 4x4. Roads were fairly slippy. Some of the hills were waist deep in powder so be prepared for some exercise;)

I genuinely couldn't believe it it was like a ski resort. Have photos but only on phone and not arsed transferring, sorry. get out there and experience it for yourself (in a 4x4!)

Went up to Glencree yesterday in a 4x4. Wouldnt take a car anyway. Snow was amazing..we were shocked when we got up there! Only prob is trying to get back up after boardin down. Anyone know a spot with a road at the top and bottom of a slope (read field!) which would make it worthwhile..

Have attached a pic. Snow was several feet deep in locations!

Wow i never expected the snow to be like that, you could build yourself a nice kicker on that hill!

what a day. up at the crack of dawn (930 for me!) threw open the curtains and was greeted by all that snow. with a map a guy in BLVD kindly drew out for me, headed up alone (couldnt convince any friends to come - boo!) up the glencree way. got so close but on my own in an opel corsa i had to suck it up and realise enough was enough when the hill got ridiculous.

heavy heart, turned around, sucked it up and paid 30 euro into kilternan. one of the best days ever - snow in the golf course to the right of the slope is full of gorgeous powder and a few kickers. and then the sky cleared and it was bluebirds for the rest of the day. and all this a 25min drive from town!

the button lift came in handy - would have sucked to do a wonderful 5second powder run only to be faced with a ten min walk back everytime!!!!

keen to go riding again this week though if anyone's up for it, not necessarily kilternan - would like to try glencree if i can get there..........

I'm heading up tomorrow morning, watching the weather it looks like the snow might not be all that good :(
my only prob is i have a rear wheel drive heavy merc but i do have snow chains.
i think that good chance of the roads being clear anyway.
if the snow is good tomorrow then i might be up for going Tuesday as well.
I will post tomorrow on how i get on and whats the snow like.

Let me know how ya get on and ill be glad to meet up with ya on tuesday

Link to where i was on sat
on sat nearly all cars had to park where stocking lane and cruagh road meet there is a car park but it was full of snow, but there was space by the side of the road. some 4x4 and one or two others made it to with in a few 100 yards of the spot but you needed snow chains or a 4x4

More pics of Glencree attached and our kicker. Seriously need to find a spot with a way of driving from the bottom to the top of the slope as too much hard work trudging up through heavy snow! 4x4 only guys. So many people causing hassle by heading up in small inequipped cars.

Re road conditions, a four wheel drive would be better but from Kiltiernan via Glancullen and up to Stocking Lane road was dry on Sunday so a normal car should be fine if driven cautiously. I think what was slowing things down was bad drivers not pulling in enough into the snow to allow others pass. Some crazy drivers though, I met a lorry bombing down the road from Total Fitness in Sandyford on Sunday morning, far too fast for the conditions considering the threat of black ice.

I wasn't up as far as Glencree but I presume it's clear, what about the Sally Gap?

I was up there again today just about no one on the mountain where i was only 4 people went by in 4-5 hours.
the snow has frozen a lot and is quite hard and not that nice, the stuff near the forests seems quite nice still and soft so going to try find some sheltered stuff tomorrow.

what a week that was- six days of downhill snowbashing. kayaks, inner tubes, rubber boats, snowboards, bodyboards and i'm pretty sure someone had an ironingboard out too. i'm gonna try to round up some video and photos from my friends cameras and phones and get them online.

I wonder how many years it'll be before we see a metre of snow on the wicklow gap again?

I was up Corrig Mountain (618m) today up from Tallaght on way to Kilbride, there is still lots of snow but it is very heavy. Had snow shoes and hike to the top and then some heavy turns back down, hard work. I had planned to climb Kippure but the road was closed before Glencree. Much less snow on Eastern Wicklow mountains than Western. Sugar Loaf is bare of snow.
