Installing WinXP on a new SATA disk

The SATA hard disk in my brothers 2 year old Compaq C300 laptop has died. He bought a replacement HD today but cannot get XP to reinstall from the recovery CD's. It appears that the problem is because there are no SATA drivers on the recovery CD, and the OS therefore cannot see the new hard drive. SATA drivers are available from the Compaq site but these require a floppy to install, and the laptop doesn't have a floppy! We tried disabling SATA support in the BIOS but that makes no difference. The BIOS can see the new HD and disk diagnostic tests indicate that the new HD is ok.

Despite a lot of head scratching, we've been unable to come up with a workaround for this. Searches on other internet forums are very vague with suggestions and workarounds. Can someone give me some pointers to help get around this please? Thanks in advance ;)

remember using nlite to add the drivers to a custom install disc to do this so i wouldnt have to look for drivers ever time i reinstalled.

have you tried putting driver on a usb stick and pressing F6 durring set up when it prompts you to load drivers? not sure if this works from usb though.

Check in the bios for an option called hard drive mode or something like that. It will be in AHCI mode. You should be able to change it to ATA mode. If you don't have this option then you'll have to use nlite to slipstream service pack 2 on to an installation disk.

This should do it. The process is simple enough in itself. There are lots of step by step tutorials available.

    Folks,

many thanks to you all for your advice. I managed to get the laptop going again by using an external USB floppy and installing the correct SATA drivers prior to kicking off the recovery. Incidentally, I had to do the reinstall from an original Win XP disk - the recovery disks kept failing saying that it couldn't install from the hive (?). Weird...

    Thanks all once again

    Sham
