Free and open-source *hardware* group?

    Hi,

Would anyone be interested in joining in, and facilitating, the development of free and open-source hardware projects in Ireland?

It just occurred to me that a group set up for that purpose might be worth establishing.

    Here's a tentative mission statement :
    - to increase awareness and understanding of free and open-source hardware and technology
    - to facilitate the actual building of such hardware - perhaps even the sharing of tools and workshop areas if people are willing

That would quite likely need to be revised, but should give a rough idea of what I'm thinking of.

I'm not sure the idea has merit, but thought it was at least sharing.

    Examples of such projects :
    - RONJA ( http://ronja.twibright.com/ ) - a D.I.Y. wireless device
    - RepRap ( http://www.reprap.org/ ) - a 3D printer

    Hey,

Yeah I would be interested in something like this. I dont have much experience in this area but I recently bought an arduino board.

A few people on the arduino forum said they would be interested in something like this aswell.

    Hi punkle. Hi Offy.

I would probably be most enthusiastic about a project that was open to people regardless of their level of experience (I might be disqualifying myself otherwise).

I don't have an arduino myself, but thanks for the link. I guess some those folks might be interested in this as well. I'll keep that thread in mind anyway - in case I manage to build or acquire an arduino myself at some stage - although I'm down the country, rather than in Dublin.

Offy : I'll PM you shortly.

I discovered this recently: the USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral).
It was developed in tandem with the GNU Radio project.

    Hi Conor, and others.
I don't know if there would be sufficient interest, but - if so - maybe we could look into setting up a Google group for this?

    Hi All,
I'm currently assembling some boards from the OpenDCC project (a project to deliver an open source hardware offering for the digital control of model railways).

I intend to write a PHP app to interface with it so I can build a web app (possible control of model railway from smart phone etc.)

Best of luck with anything you set up in Ireland.
