He needs to transfer is to an Irish one if he is here more than 12 months or intends to be.

    and no again

Obviously he can't renew it here (unless there is something the Hungarian embassy can do for him), as the Irish authorites have no jurisdiction over Hungarian documents.

There is no need (or law) to transfer an EU licence to an Irish one, regardless of how long you've been here. Transferral (on time) is however an option if you can't make it back to the country in which it was issued. There probably are some rules on how much longer the licence needs to be valid before it can be transferred, but I'm not sure about that ...best check beforehand.

Well Hungry is a memmber of the EU so unless he goes home to renew it hes gonna have to exchange it for a Irish one before it expires.

It also depends on where his permanent residence is now, and whether he could even renew his licence back in Hungary if he wanted to. I have a Dutch licence at the moment, but there's no way on earth I could ever renew it in Holland, since I'm not resident there. I'd imagine the Hungarian authorities would be a bit more "flexible" in such matters than most other EU countries though.

Yes,he can exchange it to an irish one no problem (just as my missus did)

    Alun,

What makes you think the Hungarian authorities would be more "flexible" ;) ?
Unfortunetly we are obsessed with paperwork and documents, this is something we inherited from our german and russian "friends" :(

Oh, I don't know .. a bit of a throwaway comment, really, but I suppose I'd assumed that with the breakaway from soviet influence that excessive officialdom would have been one of the first things to go, but obviously I was wrong. I knew a couple of Hungarians back in the 80's who'd escaped to the west, and they were some of the most laid-back people I've ever come across.

That and the Dutch are anal about being registered to an address with the Belastingdienst and the Gemeente.

If anything Ireland and the UK are the most lax on where you are resident.

yeah there is no prob he can change it to an irish one,ii worked in inurance and a lot of eastern european people changed the licence to an Irish one,the only thing is that even though you might have had your hungarian licence for 10 years, when you change yo an irish one it just has date of issue, adn does not show how long over all you have had a licence like on other licences( well as far as i can remember that is the way they are) e.g it looks like you just started drivivg

Unfortunetly it is still the same,or maybe worst
Though it's good to see that the Hungarian goverment is implementing good ideas from the Irish one :VRT,extra tax on fuel, extra income tax, higher VAT :D

I transferred my South African license for an Irish one around 7 years ago. Called them up, posted mine to them and they posted the Irish one out within a week.

May be a quicker route to go when considering he may have to go back to Hungary to get his done?
