    Hi,

The wireless modem in my HP laptop gave up the ghost about two months ago but I can still connect to the internet when I plug directly into my wireless router. Can anyone offer any advice on why this might have occurred (corrupt files maybe?) and how I can go about repairing it? confused.gif Any help would be much appreciated

Just to clarify, are you talking about the WiFi connection?

Or do you have a wireless modem, such as an O2/Vodafone/3?

What has changed on the laptop? When did the problem start? Was it after some software/hardware install?

Also, what security software do you have installed?

    Hi Tom,

The wifi connection works fine because my brother was able to connect to the interent wirelessly when he called around. I'm referring to the internal modem in my lap top. When I switch it on the light stays red (turns blue when activated).

It started around early December but I don't recall installing any software around that time. I use AVG for virus protection etc.

Can you post up the make and model number of the laptop?

Is it a normal 56k modem? I didn't think they had lights on them (then again, I haven't used one in about five years :)).

I am trying to get my head around what type of modem it is.

I have had the same problem on a HP pavilion 2000 laptop. The wifi button on the front of the lap top even when turned on the orange lamp stays on (normally lamp turns blue when wifi is working). The lap top cannot find any wireless networks and the option to search for wireless networks is no longer there. As a quick fix I used the wireless usb stick that I got with my netgear wireless router and it works fine without the need for a lan cable. Any help also about how to repair would be great thanks.

Right well the thing is most wireless adapters come with their own software which locks out the wireless section in the windows control panel. So if you scan for networks in the Windows control panel it will just keep saying that there are none in range?.

There should be a specific piece of software on the laptop to configure your wireless card. Check the start menu and see if you can find anything to do with you Wifi connection in there...
