Was just reading an article about SIMI pressing the government for a resuce package for the motor trade and they are going on about the government stopping illegal imports..

Are the talking about people importing cars for their own use or garages importing english reg cars to sell them on or what are they referring to?

Over half the SIMI garages are selling imports I'd say, so I wouldn't even listen to them. They're full of cr@p!

Probably all the foreign reg cars (UK/NI etc) that are driving around without the VRT paid on them is what they mean.

Ummm BMW dealerships are rumoured to be importing cars from the UK because its cheaper than taking trade in BMW's from the Irish people who pay their wages.

Give us better deals or your going under.

However, I dont know whether the reporter made a boo boo or the SIMI guy actually said. I would believe the reporter is reporting something that was probably not said.

I'd say it's a mis-report, the SIMI's problem is cars driving here illegally due to a lack of VRT being paid.

This is one of the issues though - even if everyone who brought a car in went and VRT'd within an hour of it being in Ireland, it still wouldn't save the motor industry now would it!

SIMI are acting like it would...

Nope, but it'd "save" the government, who are looking to make cuts to budgets all over the place. Everyone who lives and works in Ireland should pay the appropriate taxes.

Imports are taking new car sales away from Irish dealers, but they'll still get servicing revenue from these cars (depending on age). Also, a lot of dealers are importing themselves and so at least it's improving the level of competition in the industry.

The "imports situation" isn't going to last forever, sterling will recover and take some of the savings away, second-hands will become harder and harder to sell as Carzone (and the other sites) get full of private sellers who are trying to sell their old cars.
In the meantime, you gotta grin and bear it, there's no point in a witch-hunt.

There are better initiatives that I'd support that can make an impact.
