hi any help would be greatfully appreciated.

when i go to open a word document a dialog box pops up saying file conversion. it then gives me 3 options windows(default), ms-dos and other encoding. but the file still appears to be a mess of symbols no matter which one i choose. any advice to safe the file would be great as its for my fyp and i stupidly never backed up the changes i made yesterday.

What is the exact message in the dialog box? And what is the title of the dialog window?

Also what is the extension on the file (.doc/.docx etc)? If you can't see the extension, right-click on the file and choose properties, and you'll see a box at the top of the window which appears which has the full name of the file and its extension in it.

What version of Word do you have installed? (Go to Help -> About Microsoft Word)

Is this happening on the same computer you originally created the file in? Have you been working on the file on any other computers? If so, what versions of Word did they have installed?
