    Hi All

More a theoretical question. I’m putting together a list of jobs in which professionals find themselves in an excellent position to pick up gossip in relation to the town or city in which they are based. So far I’ve come up with the following. If anyone knows any others, I’m all ears.

    Thanks for all responses.

Bar Workers: As some people like to gossip on nights out under the influence of alcohol, bar workers are potentially in a position to over hear things.

    switchboard operator?

Hey, maybe this job doesn't exist but my parents were telling years ago you connecting your calls through the local post office. And the ol' biddys there were notorious for listening in calls.
But hey, that's years and years ago. It's probably a computer nowadays

I suppose Post office worker. You see who is on benefits, who lost their job, who is a single parent, who pays their bills late and you basically get to know everything, especially in a rural area.

I used to work for a mobile phone company, and they can easily see every text you send. Lots of boring rubbish to sift through, but every now and then a good piece of gossip would appear.

Bank staff and Gardaí would be the first that come to mind. Citizen's Advice Bureau staff/volunteers. GP's secretary.

However just because someone is in a position to pick up the gossip, doesn't mean they're in a position to share it.

When I first got to Ireland, I quickly landed a job in a newspaper.

I went from knowing nothing about the place I was living in to knowing nearly everything about it within a week or two. No joke - knew more than my husband who'd lived there for 20 years :)
